MP5002 with remove paper from staple tray message.

This machine is a new install with a SR3090 finisher (looks like a SR 790).

Everything sets up and operates fine, but the next day the customer is unable to select sort or staple sort. The screen indicates to remove paper frome staple tray. Tech can get everything to reset and operate until the next morning.

So far the only things tried are to reseat connectors and firmware update. I'm kinda stumped on this one.

Has any one seen this problem on this machine and finisher, or previous models with the SR 790 (1000 sheet finisher). I'm leaning towards the finisher board, but wanted to give a shout out to you all to see if there are anythings he may be overlooking, before I have him order the board.

As always I appreciate any insight that you provide.

What's up with you guys aiming at pricey logic-boards first? This sounds more like some stubborn actuator/sensor issue to me.

I'm totally with Gift on this one.

The sensors on this finisher can be a bit of a sore spot, especially on a new install such as this.

While it (almost) no doubt left the factory in perfect condition, it doesn't take much for even the best delivery drivers to get them knocked out of whack and do funky stuff.

While I never actually worked on them, up until late last year I project managed quite a number of large installs, and there were always at least a few of these (usually quite a few) on every order, so I've seen these sensors and actuators get beat up more than my fair share.

I'd go one of two ways.

1.) Transport damage. There's a sensor out of position somewhere. Does this have an exit arm on it?

2.) Return it to Ricoh as an out-of-box failure.

I know that the second one's a bit of a cop-out, but if it's brand new then how good will it look to the customer if you're changing boards at this juncture?

          Wow.

I had no intention to upset anyone with my question.

I agree that board replacement can be costly and should be avoided.
That is why I posted this thread.

I have seen it a few times that a sensor gets knocked out of place during delivery.

I have been trying to help the tech over the phone. He has indicated the the input/ output checks check out fine. He had the entire finisher opened up so that he could check out the actuators.

As I indicated he has been successful in getting the problem reset, only to come back the next day.

He called Ricoh Tech Support and they told him to do a firmware update. I agreed that it wouldn't hurt to do the firmware, but, didn't think that would be the fix.

I was hoping that maybe someone here may have seen the problem before.

            Classic answere

Is it even possible to reproduce the issue under certain circumstances? Since I don't use these machines with english display language:

I guess the staple tray is the thing inside the finisher and not the shift sort tray (that collects the finished/stapled output)?

I know that such messages aren't neccessarily a bug in certain situations (in case the machine asks for removing the paper from internal paper stack @stapler). In case of doubt it wouldn't hurt to interview the customer what kind of print/copyjob he did or if he tried to interrupt a job. In case the memory ist lost (customers brain) you might ask to monitor the events if this happens the next time.

I had the opertunity to be at another machine today and I did a couple of expeirments on the finisher. I think that he has a flakey sensor. I called the tech and tried to duplicate the problem on the machine I was working on. I told him to order the sensor (even gave him the part #), but just in case had him get the board also( We can always return the board if unused.

Thanks for the help. I will keep you posted.

Tech had returned with sensor and with the board.
                Neither fixed the problem.
He had to dis assemble and reassemble a few times, and could get everything to reset and work temp.
On his last visit he cut the zip ties on the wire harness to the staple tray sensor.
It has been going on 2 weeks now with no reoccurance of the problem.

Thanks to everyone for your support and input.
