Aficio 2232 - Scan to mail - occasional corrupt pdf files

    Hi,

Customer was complaining that they sometimes couldn't open certain pages in a scanned document. Usually it happened with larger docs (15 - 20 pages) but sometimes it would happen with 2 – 3 pages. The resulting pdf opens without problems, but on certain random pages acrobat reader would display an error message ‘Insufficient data for an image’. That page would then be displayed as a blank page. However, they do have an alternate pdf program which does open the file without problems. (Nitro PDF iirc).

The problem doesn’t occur always. I had to scan multiple 20+ page bundles to get the error and only when set to 600dpi. However according to the customer they had the problem also at 200dpi with 3 page docs. I tried different dpi settings, different compression methods (in the scanner sp mode) and tried a few different mail servers (they use their own mail server normally) I haven’t tried scan to folder, because they all use citrix to connect to a remote desktop, which I believe isn’t supported by the copier.

Apart from checking for firmware updates, I’m rather stumped. I did found this: FIX: "Insufficient data for an Image" error when you open a .pdf file that is exported from a SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services or SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services environment and the fact that it does open in other programs makes me think it’s not related to the copier, but I can’t explain why this would happen? I checked TESSA but couldn't immediatly find anything.

    Has anybody experienced this before?

Sounds to me like you need to turn off "Max Email size" in scanner features. Even when "divide and send per max size" is on, you'll get corrupt files when it is divided

max email size was set to 10000kb, I changed it to Off, divide mails has been set to Off.

I have to say that this particular file was scanned at 600dpi just so I could cause the problem. I had spent almost an hour scanning docs before I even saw the error.

True dat. See what I did there? Ok, I'll explain.

The Ricoh products have a maximum email size of 2048kb set as standard from the factory and, when this limit is exceeded, it transmits a .dat file. To turn it off, go to User Tools - Scanner Features - Send Settings. At least I think that it's in there. If not it's in User Tools - System Settings - File Transfer.

Interesting....I seldom, to never use Adobe Reader anymore, and I am able to open all pages with Foxit Reader with no problem, However, Adobe DOES give me an error on Page 13...I'm just sayin'

This is interesting. My guess, and it is a guess, is that Adobe Reader (and I've tried both 9 and X) are too clever for their own good. There also seems to be many, many threads relating to this issue, not just from scanned documents from copiers but also relating to PDFs created using other Adobe products such as Distiller, therefore it leads me to suggest that the customer should be advised that it's an issue with Adobe Reader rather than the scanner. Easy for me to say, I know!

I've messed around with various settings in Adobe Reader's preferences without success. Sorry!

I can also open the Doc with 'Foxit', print it to 'PDF creator', and then I'm able to view the entire document no problem with Adobe. Maybe it has something to do with firmware/conflict with Adobe. I'd recommend using another reader, there are many that are far superior anyway, and much quicker to load

                    Inter-darn-resting....

I downloaded your example PDF file and found a bit of a twist to your fault.
I open the file in internet explore using adobe reader addon. I then navigated quickly to page 13. Well, true to your word, there was an error on page 13.

Not thinking anything more about it I then clicked on page 12 and page 14, they both worked fine. Then I clicked back on page 13 and lo and behold page 13 now works but page 12 doesn't. The Xref table pointer reference inside the PDF file head appears to now dereferenced page 12. the stream block inside the file works as it should except the stream decode algorithm is failing. At first impressions I would beleive it is zlib decoding block that is dereferencing inside the PDF file may be failing. The pointer stream may be in error when passed to zlib,ascii85 or jpg/tiff decoding alorigthm. It could be an issue with Zlib memory allocation size and pointer.

The fact that both pages display fine at first leads me to beleive the xref table in the PDF header is corrupting its pointers to the page stream blocks. When zlib is passed a stream to encode/decode it must be inside a know block of memory bytes. If the PDF page is sliced (divide-send) outside its stream memory block any thing can happen. This could also be the case with ascii85 algorithm when divide and send is used.

In other words the zlib algorithm inside the PDF read is looking for 'X' number of bytes to fill is memory block before decoding that block. If that block of memory is only half full it will decode with errors. The half full memory block is cause at the PDF physical file boundary where the divide and send email may have occured.

Sorry to those for the baffling b/s but the I.T. guys might find it note worthy.
