    Ricoh MPC5501 Grey lines

    Hey there
Had to performed an nvram replacement on a MPC5501...brand new machine. Machines functions properly with no SC codes but now it is giving a repeat grey charge looking lines on copies or prints. It only happens to the black...all other colors are perfect. It almost looks as though it has some sort of charge problem. I have replaced the drum with the same result. I have verified all SP modes with original birth certificate and all values are normal. Its hard to explain so I have attached a pdf of a test pattern print out. The defect can be seen on the ITB and on the drum when stopped during operation. Any input is much appreciated.
    Thanks

That's a test pattern (Horizontal Grayscale I think). Make sure SP2109-2 and SP4417 are set to "0". You may want to check the SP settings against the birth certificate and make sure everything matches.

I used the test pattern to show the defect a little better. It shows up as light grey lines in the non image area not in the feed direction...it doesnt seem to show in solid black (sky shot)
      Thanks

Sorry, I rushed through your post and totally missed that you were using a test pattern and checked the SP's (Doh!). Do you have another machine you can borrow an entire unit out of for testing? I know there is a tag on each pcu with sp settings specific to that unit but you said you already checked it. I concur it could be charge related, have you replaced that yet?

          Bizarre!

I'd be tempted to try setting the drum back up again, maybe in SP3902, then possibly go medieval on its ass with an SP5801.

Failing that, maybe replace the PCU and dev unit and set them up with SP3902?

This is very odd though, almost as odd as replacing the NVRAM on a brand new machine.

I don't get the connection between the issue and the NV-Ram either any the symptome looks a bit subtly to me. Unfortunately I don't have a 5501 at hand to do a comparison. What happen if you try other paper types (color copy paper) or set the paper type to thick (=reducing process speed testwise)? In case you just swapped the drum unit you could try replacing the dev unit as well. ITB should be fine if you say that the issue is visible on the drum when stopped during printing.

Looks like a developer bias shorting. I dont think it has anything to do with an SP. Wondering why the NVRAM was replaced in the first place. What was the original problem? Too many copies on the meter?

The machine kept throwing SC195 (serial number mismatch)....only one number would be off on the serial. I would restart the machine and it would come up fine with the correct serial....a few minutes later I would wake the machine up from sleep mode and bam SC195 with the serial number off by a number. It led me to believe it had a faulty NVRAM. After the nvram replacement no more 195s...but that copy quality issue.
                Thanks

I wonder if you could reinstall the old nvram, upload the data to a sd card, install the new nvram and download the saved data to it.
But it still looks like a bias issue to me.

Changing the serial number is usually to hide it's identity - like when Ricoh sell machines to a copier trader cheap for the African market then the copier trader changes the serial number and sells them to dealers in the original country!

Solved!......Thanks to all that responded to my thread. Performed and Engine Clear...re-enter birth certificate info and copies look great. The only thing I can think of is when we installed the new NVRam we never performed a memory clear on it....even though the new ram should be blank it must have had a wacky setting hidden it somewhere.
                      Thanks

Have you checked the ground on the power sully?? Sometimes will cause uneven charge if loose.
