Was the Development UNIT changed or just the Developer?

          Hi there!
I think the complete devunit.Only changing the developer was only good for ca. 10-25K copies. With the new devunit the machine holds the quality for a much longer time. But you have no chance to clean the magroller with a folded piece of paper as adviced by RICOH (in Germany).
          Greetings...

The new-style dv-unit and mag-roller does improve things, that's right. Unfortunately the mag roller does still get coated with melted toner, just not that quickly and once you had to clean it a few times, the coating effect will be gone. I also tried different polish/waxing stuff without true success. These machine's aren't made for quality-demanding customers - they will call before 50k prints. If the customer is less picky you might get 50-100k and if the customer only expect that the paper find it's way to the output tray, you might actually find this machine running well within the specification.

To bandaide the toner coated dev mag roller you can :
Lower the drum charge roller voltage and increase the dev bias voltage to compensate.
This will give you time to get back to the machine for a service at a later stage.
              SP 2001-1 Charge roller
              SP 2201-1 Dev Bias.

Remember this is a bandaide only...

If somebody put the wrong toner in it and realized their mistake before you got there it could do what you're seeing. The bad toner would also be present behind the drum blade and in the collection coil, so it would re-contaminate new developer. Since it only does when they fiddle with the bias for photo mode it wouldn't take much to throw it off and depending on which wrong toner it might not work its way out.

I realize it's a long shot, but I've seen stranger things.

                    Hi,

there is a way to clean the magnetic roller.
First you have to remove the Tonerbottle (better Tonersupply Unit) and make black copys (whole page black) until you get the "Toner End" screen.
After this remove the development Unit and the magnetic roller. Clean the magnetic roller as good as you can until the whole black film is removed.
For cleaning you can use a "magic sponge" Amazon.com: Magic Sponge Stain Eraser Cleaner Pads - 4-Pad Set: Home & Kitchen
Assamble the maschine and start the developer initialisation. The whole process takes ~ 20min and you get a better image qualiti again.

Yes you are right.. At one instance it happened for Printer SP8200DN, and by cleaning (in fact washing) this Mag roller with Sponge, the print quality was improved. Cleaning with Paper folde was also good idea but not much effective.

I know but the blacks appear poor enough "out of the box" - If I try compensate the coating issue the contrast will become even lighter. Besides - since we got the new toner I don't have major background issues any more but the overall quality is still quite poor because of the poor blacks. Quality looks good after PM but always fade to grey way before the next scheduled PM.

                          you are right.
I forgot to say that the way i described is not a permanent solution. After 30-40K copies you have to do the same procedure again.
I know its annoying, but in my eyes the best way to get a better image quality (black, not gray) without replacing the developer.

Ensure that you have the new/modified development Unit (old: 1 filter, new: 3 filter). With the new unit the qualitiy is a litte bit better.
