MP161 \ pull scan with usb

is it possible to setup pull scanning on a 161 with a usb connection?
I have a client that is using usb to print, his networking is through the power grid of his home.
His office is in a separate building on the property a distance away from his home.
The other question is, can scanning be setup using a cross over cable?

Yes, of course you can scan via a crossover cable, and if it's a newer Windows 7 laptop, a regular cable should work.
Scanning is not possible via USB

Are you sure about the last bit? I thought that this machine supports TWAIN?

        It supports "network" twain.
I've never been able to configure twain other than via tcp/ip, but I'd be interested to hear from others

Yeah, you're probably right, it's been a long day.

I'm not even sure why I replied, my head hurts and I've had too much wine to type anything of any worth.

Of course, it's generally hard to tell with me!

We probably get that question twice a week.

            TWAIN yes, USB no.

The goofy part is that the consumer versions can all scan using USB.

            Can you say "Marketing"?

Consumer machines can scan via USB, but that's just a bloated TWAIN interface. Ricoh and most of the 'big boy pant' manufacturers are looking at their target audience being workgroups as opposed to single PC users. It still amazes a friend of mine when I can scan from my MP 171 and have it show up on my laptop on a different floor of the office almost instantly while he has to hook up a USB to his laptop to use his little Epson inkjet scanner.

Two completely different audiences, and never shall the two meet...

Thanks to all that have answered my quarry.
I will be testing this in the shop today.
