    MP161 jam upon startup

I've got a rather beleaguered Aficio MP161 that I spent the majority of my afternoon beating my head against. It throws the generic paper jam code immediately every startup. No specific code, just "follow instructions on right cover to remove." I removed evidence of this copier's 281,000 pages of hell - a mysterious plastic bit jammed in the pressure roller, numerous bits of paper throughout the fuser and transfer unit, and plenty of ancient toner dust.

I've checked the fuser exit sensor and gone through the output checks in SP mode to test the motors and clutches. I haven't got much field experience yet; is there anything glaringly obvious I'm missing?

When you say it jams at 'start up'...is that from "main power" start up, or recovery from "auto power off'? and once cleared with the side cover, it operates properly until the next 'power off' cycle?
What does the "jam history" say (code wise).
    P.S.
281K isn't such a 'beleaguered' number. I've got several 1515mf's and MP161's with WAY beyond that, that just won't die, and ask for nothing more than fuser rollers, PCU's, and feed tires

From main power start up. It wouldn't clear with the side cover. And because it wouldn't clear, I couldn't print a jam history.

I agree with you; the number's often dependent on how the copier is treated by the end users. I found out what the problem was this morning; the fuser guide plate was completely missing. I suspect it got ripped out/broken by somebody ripping out paper after one too many "accordion fold"-style jams, because one of its plastic rollers was what I found wedged in the pressure roller just below.

Took a second set of eyes for me to even notice it was gone. Sometimes it's just literally right in front of you.

"Ain't that the truth"! We've all been there. Glad the problem's solved
