    HDD vs PSU

I'd like to ask a question as i have a problem at the same time :
Can a bad HD (not spinning for ex.) effect a P.S.U? What do you think?
(I have a customer with an AF-2075 and he found it "dead" in the morning, it could not wake up from power save mode, noway... I found a very very hot HD and a dead PSU, only the 5V line was active.. This happened two times in six months).
Thanks a lot for any info...

I think this is very very unlikely - there's probably something else causing the issue but it's hard to guess what it might be. Since the HDD data and power cable is usually connected to the controllerboard it might be something to consider if the machine was knocked out with a faulty HDD and PSU twice.

I think I would start with a quality line filter,(not surge suppressor) and see what happens from there.

        HDD Vs PSU

Bad Hd not spinning up will have a directly 863 or a Machine stalls at ''Please Wait''sometimes .Gift is x2 on this it's very weird,i had couple of blown PSU's and few Hd's heading south, but never like this.

I think shadow1 has the exact answer for this, let's wait.

          Dear fan club...

Had plenty of HDD's fail, but never had one take out a PSU. I suspect it would be more likely the PSU took out the HDD. Rare and unlikely, but not impossible either way.

These PSU's are designed with a "Crowbar" circuit - anything resembling a dead short (like throwing a crowbar across the mains) will disable the supply faster than it can blow a fuse. Should reset if that was the case though. If you had a dead supply and a super hot drive it had to be an odd failure - pulled enough power to get hot, but not enough to blow a fuse or shut it down immediately. Unless...

Rember the HDD uses +5 but it also uses +12 for the spindle motor, and as far as I know nothing else in the copier uses +12. Either the motor could be bad and slowly burned itself and the PSU up, or the PSU could have started it.

Either way you got a dead drive and power supply. Swap 'em both.

I put an A.V.R 3000KVA the first time it happened.
PSU took south with it the tray 2 lift motor (24V) not the HD. This time i will replace the PSU (again) to see what happens with HD.
I thought for a bad -not totally bad- HD, because the symptoms are at first in the morning, when it wakes up...
How many times we say : οh! it doesn't boot up? disconnect HD...etc..
P.S. Thanks to all for your opinions, i tried to answer to all of you 'cause i can't use the multiquote/multi-answer style!!!!
