The MP4000B is the basic model and supports only B&W scan, the MP4000SP is required to do colour scanning.

If it was possible, it would require replacing the exposure lamp, scanner CCD, the IPU Board and the BICU board for starters. If I was so inclined I would check the parts manual to see what parts are specific to each version.

Point being, the scanners are substantially different in hardware, there isn't some kind of SD card that enables colour scanning, you need have the actual colour parts on the copier.

And that is a whole lot of expensive parts.

Save yourself a headache and break the bad news to the customer, you might even be able to sell them something far better than an MP4000 and make your life easier down the road.

It is not possible to add this feature. This is the reasoning for the B version. Ricoh offered the B model as a cheaper version but with out the color scan to email. If your customer is wanting color scan to email they will have to replace this unit with the regular 4000. All B version models machines are not capable of this feature.
