If it is anything like Toshiba and Konica Minolta, then the machine must natively unstand the reader or have the ability to have a driver installed on the machine so that it does understand the reader.

I have been playing around with barcode scanners on Konica Minolta devices and finally found one that the machine natively understands. I could then enable its use through PaperCut.

logging to papercut through bar code? isn't that a potential security threat?

No different to watching someone type in their PIN or password when using the username and password or losing your HID card...

A lot of ID cards, a very common method of logging in, use a simple 3 of 9 barcode.

I set up an Equitrac system in a high school a few years ago that way.

That's right and the reason most people / software companies use the 3 of 9 font is because there is no licencing or royalties required to use it. The secret to making the barcode slightly more secure when using there systems is to make sure that you don't have the ASCII output of the barcode printed below.

Alot of barcodes have the number or what ever the barcode stands for printed under the barcode it self and with PaperCut and other systems, all you need to do is manually type this output into the ID Number field on the machine and it will log you in.

But you can also do this with HID cards as well if they aren't one of the 40Bit Vendor locked type cards which mask part of the APN.
