Add Toner = Print off a Non default smc if you can. Drop the NVRAM full reset. Load in the non default settins and set up the registration. VERY INPORTANT to do the reg.

    This will sort it.

Fault caused by the Chip in the toner bottle not given the correct MR reading to the BCU causing add toner. One way to see this is turning on toner icons in SP 5--- . Your see one of the colours missing.
This works every time for me.

    Good luck

thanks everyone for your input, it's all taken into consideration as it is likely to happen again, and likely for different reasons.
But in this case it was the controller board - yes, controller board. We had a few machines doing weird things after thunderstorms in July and August - surge protectors are a must!

You COULD try the NVRAM/Engine clear but it's mostly the fix for the MPC2500/2800/3000 range.
If the dev unit is well over life you may as well change that at the same time....as everyone has stated it's usually either a blocked pipe or a pump on the 3500/4500.

It could be the toner bottle detect board at the back. I've had one or two of those go before after replacing the pump(s) to no avail.

Sometimes when they are swapped i have had to run though the add toner process a good few times to get the levels back. It is the pump too often to not to try simply replacing it.

Does it actually say Loading Toner when you remove and replace/refit the bottle?

If not it could possibly be theres a Cover Open

I agree the pump is always the problem, in my experience, with this problem. I've never seen anything else on these machines.

    Hi,

I can almost guarantee that this is the toner pump i must have fitted over 50 of these, if non oem toner is used then its 100% the problem. when you change it i would also give the nozzle a clean too.

    Regards
