Ricoh aficio 2060 drum replacement help

    Greetings everyone!

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I have a client who has a Ricoh aficio 2060 and they are saying the drum needs replacement. I am a computer technician by trade (CompTIA A+ Cert and several years of experience) and have not performed a huge amount of printer service. I am deciding if I am ready to take on this repair/replacement for my client and have been unable to find a service manual. Has anyone replaced such a unit before? If so, could you offer a quick run thru on how the job is done?

Thanks to anyone and everyone for reading and offering assistance.

    Best Regards

Don't even try it. High speed machines like this need quite a bit of know how to service internally, and just replacing the drum isn't going to do much without a new blade, brush, and all of the other PM items. Even for an experienced tech, a standard PM on this class machine is generally close to a two hour process. Have the customer call in a trained technician to deal with the machine, it should be under a maintenance contract of some kind.

Thanks to you both for your honest opinion. I'll take your advice and pass on performing this service. I am pretty handy and all but it sounds like I would be performing a disservice by replacing just the drum and not all the PM parts. I'd rather turn the job down at this point then have the customer spend money and not be happy with the results (even though they are requesting just the drum be replaced).

            Thanks again!

The transition from a printer to a full copier in terms of repairs becomes greater with the speed of the copier: a small table top unit for the most part will be no more complex than a standard HP type laser device, but once speed becomes more of a factor then the maintenance becomes much greater. By the time you're past 40 pages a minute on a copier the differences internally are too great to have a desktop tech do more than troubleshoot a basic problem.

Also, take into account that the customer may be using the term 'replace the drum' as their sort of advanced troubleshooting when in fact the problem may be something unrelated to the drum itself like a worn drum blade or a dying corona wire which just replacing the one item would do nothing for. Think of it like a user with a low RAM PC trying to make their machine faster by deleting files from the hard drive when that has very little to do with their issue.

lol. So many times this has happened.... Thanks again for all the great information. My other concern was that of who determined this unit needs a new drum. I agree entirely that the customer may think it's a drum only to have it be another component. Going to send them on to a qualified repair technician. I know when to say "sorry I can't do this, it's beyond my scope of knowledge". Just because it's kinda like a computer does NOT make it the same thing :-D Cheers

go into sp mode and print out the pm parts list my guess is its going to cost quite a bit to pm this machine when you get the list and see how many parts are over the pm shedule...

Yeah and on another note tell the service guy to bring the following items to save you money on another call out. i am just saying that if this guy comes out and spends an hour or two cleaning it without the parts, he will have to put in a RTF ( return to fit ) which means coming backs in a few days and having to clean and repair the machine which could be 2 or 3 hours labour more

make sure he has a convienience kit with him before arriving or

                      a2959510 - Drum
                      ad041056 - Blade
                      B2472330 - Brush
                      Charge corona wire
                      airfilter x 2
                      Feed and sep tyres

and probably a developer lot too

This post will hopefully save you money and time as call backs are fustrating
