You must not be running the proper SP's afterward, and/or generic toner

Its been the worse case in MP 4000/5000, Clean and Polish the Mag shaft @ every Pm,Use the OEM or Genuine Ricoh toners. and as sandmanmac said, run the proper sp after after PM.

Ensure you clean then check continuity on the charge connection plate, the part at the rear where metal touches metal, I have had this go dirty may times, this gives the machine wrong vsg / vsp readings resulting in really light copies, once the charge is remade and set up, tone up the dev unit check vsg/vsp reading (4 and .5V respectively), you should see a difference.
Everybody seems to struggle with CQ with these, throwing dev, de units, PCU's etc but this is normal the issue as long as the dev unit is a modded one.

          Good luck.

if you had performed the proper procedure then you can check the toner hopper, mylars, clean the dev't roller and try force toner to test if the toner supply assy is working.
            Nobody is perfect..

I know these machines take a certain type of Dev and Ricoh actually had to change there toner due to mass complaints about Grey Copies....

My Solution was to put DEV 26 in this machine with the New MP4500e toner, Clean all units and check dev while setting SP modes

I used Dev type 18 on these machines from the AF1035/1045 with the same toner with no issue at all. Does not drop or leak toner and hold density for the majority of its life. You will find you will get more than 120K out of the Dev.

Yeah definately, just make sure you give the mag roller a really good clean and initialize as per service manual. For some reason I found that the MP4000 toner works excellent with the type 18 dev and the machine runs a lot cleaner.
