There are almost countless answers to this on this site.

Please search for them - they won't be hard to find.

Never change the Firmware first for set up scan to mail or folder.
If you ser up SMTP server name ,Path , authentication folder or SMTP and put the adminstrator password but still not work check this.

Bull. Having the latest firmware installed is always a good idea.

100%! That and/or possibly not knowing the proper procedure is exactly what's keeping it from working.

You're never wrong by updating firmware.

Not only does new firmware fix documented issues, I've seen it where it's fixed a ton of undocumented problems as well.

I can remember precisely 2 times EVER, (one Canon and one Ricoh), where new firmware broke something, and it was documented in the readme files that came with the firmware.

Considering the jump that Windows 7 made in credential hashing for CIFS shares, not updating the firmware on a machine manufactured before the introduction of Win 7 is just plain asking for trouble. Also consider the potential security change you're recommending making on a customer's computer(s). Should something like a data breach, virus, malware infection, etc happen and a security audit finds that change you'll rightly catch hell at the very least. Why lose or place a vulnerability on a customer when updating the firmware is such an easier choice? I mean, where's the downside???

                  There isn't one!

I once had a tech tell me, "Oh, that never fixes nothin'." We were having some major issues with a Segment 5 Ricoh machine at the time, particularly when printing some rather intricate Excel files.

The IT guy showed me the samples, and they were a mess.

After flashing all the firmware and updating print drivers, the files printed perfectly.

The tech never gave me any crap about updating after that little episode.

if scanning to folder check to see if the folder is shared and all relevant permissions are checked then in browser under folder authentication put in the login user name of the profile where the folder is shared and the login password of that profile, that should help in authentication put in your path to the folder
