    SC899 on MPC3501 and a MPC5501 in same customers

Resolved but passing this useful find. had a MPC3501 and a MPC5501 in the same office giving this code at nearly the same time. Both machines were without fax option and all firmware was updated to current levels. Both machines worked when not connected to customers network, all was ok as a copier and direct connection to laptop but as soon as it was booted up on customers network it would produce this code before printing anything out. Ended up being a corrupt file in the print que on both machines. How and why it gave a SC899 has not been resolved but i spent alot of time and board swapping to find this one out. I thought this may save someone alot of time, quick to rule out if you come across it.

Just got this reported on a MPC3001 customer says it showed up sc809 then 899 after reboot of machine.

Its in a school so finding the corrupt print job might take a while :/ going tommorow so wish me luck lol

I had that exact problem recently with the SC899 error that returned after I updated the firmware.
That's quite a challenge deleting the problem print jobs (or, as it only required me to think and move my fingers around, it probably wasn't that bad).
Still, just wanted to say thanks for helping me out.

Had a rash of there recently, took a while and a lot of board swapping before we tumbled it was a corrupted file in the print queue, now first thing we do is purge the queue. It always seems to be an Adobe file thats causing the problems and the theory is it all started after an automatic Adobe update went out but we can't prove it so its only a wild guess.

You can often get the troublesome file to print fine by converting it to a PDF. And also re-saving the file with a much shorter file name - apparently very long file names can trigger an immediate sc899.

Re: SC899 on MPC3501 and a MPC5501 in same customers

I recently had a similar problem with a Xerox printer except instead of an error code, the corrupt file caused the machine to continually power itself off and back on.

The part that might help you in troubleshooting a Ricoh is this:

I was pretty sure the problem was a corrupt file.

Their IT person disagreed saying they deleted everything in the print queue.

Turned out this customer had 2 print queues going to the same machine. One for Windows 7 and another for on older version of windows.

There was a corrupt file on the 2nd print queue and when deleted it solved the problem.

                  I was vindicated.

Moral of the story: Don't Trust a company's IT person to know what they are talking about.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the print job that triggers SC899 is actually corrupt.
But there is something in the print data that the software running on the newer controllers does not seem to like.

I have previously submitted a network capture of a offending print job and Ricoh did confirm the problem and issued a firmware update.

                    Code:
                    1.07 Symptom corrected:
                    1. SC899 caused by the printing of specific kinds of scalable TrueType

                    2. SC899 caused by the printing of specific kinds of scalable TrueType

I have this issue currently escalated to Japan for a final resolution to this issue. Currently I am finding a SC899 will only appear when using a postscript driver as stated in the SMC.

I have captured data in 3 different forms and can emulate the SC899 in our own environment with the captured data.

My personal opinion is that is a font related issue. Ricoh do not seem to offer no where near the amount of fonts offered compared to other copier manufacturers.

You would also find that in the previous versions, the device would spit up a code of SC990 in the SMC, provide the error in the SMC and usually spit up an syntax error and not print out the document.

I will give everyone an update when I hear back from Japan

                        Good day all,

We have had the same error occuring lately and have sat down with the clients IT dept to find the error. we have so far discovered that the print jobs causing the errors have all been jobs that the user is printing directly from the web?? If the web page is saved first and then printed the error does not occur? Seems to be that the document comes in with extra data when trying to print directly.

                        Hope this helps someone.
