I checked the parts manual for "compression springs" and didnt see any like that, the only ones in that machine that i can think of that are tapered like that are the ones in the hoppers but the one your showing looks to small to be that spring.

It honostly looks like the lower fuser roller spring on a mp2550, ld433 but not sure how that would pop out of a machine. Sorry thats not much help but I didnt see in the manual anywhere of a tapered compression spring like that.

it freaks me out after looking at the history log. it turned out that someone replaced the black toner pump unit and toner hopper unit tube a few weeks ago. do you have the picture of the compression spring at the toner hopper by any chance?

Here is a pic of the hopper assembly, it would be #5 if you remove the toner bottle and look inside the hopper you will see a black plastic cap looking thing, under that should be the spring, it basicaly just springs the toner bottle up to make good contact with the chip and for removal of the bottle.

Its possible thats where it goes, the one on the dsc328 which is the closest model i have in the field has a large spring in there like you would find in a tray under the lift plate. The 428 might not have such a large spring.

It looks like one of 4 springs in the crossbar lever that holds the drums and DV units in.

Toner pump has smaller longer springs like an auger.
Toner hopper springs are larger and don't taper @ the end.

Gimme rep points if I am right (Not really, rep points are POINTLESS.)
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

If not this, check behind the black duplex unit below the transfer assy. There is a ground spring in the rear that contacts the frame when inserted (though I'm not sure it's tapered). In any case, I think nmfaxman is correct.

I'm with nmfaxman. Looks like the cross bar spring that goes behind the securing screw.

Is the machine working? If so, is it at an account or in your shop?

It seems to me that after all of this, if the machine is working ok, it doesn't seem to be from any of the "key" areas, and apparently it's not, then don't sweat it.
We can't even be sure if it belongs to this machine. Perhaps someone in the office found it near the machine and placed it there, but it had actually fallen off of something else, or more likely, it fell out of the previous tech's tool kit.
                    Let's move on shall we?

Looks like a B039-2719 cassette spring from an MP2000 (or similar).

                        (Albeit a lot smaller).

I believe it is an earthing contact spring. These springs are mostly cone shape to collasp inside themselves and lay flat in a narrow space.
Used on some circuit boards and metal panel mounts. Check around the ITB Assy.
