    MP2000/2500 constantly dusty optics

Recently I've been given several machines in this family with long histories of service calls for dirty optics. On all of them its an ongoing issue, and they're all in pretty dust free areas. One machine (MP2500) I cleaned the optics on yesterday, and rolled up some pieces of scotch tape for the underside of the plastic panel, to maybe help it sit a little more snug. Today I get a service call for lines! Has anybody worked out a semipermanent solution for this?

Try to, gently, lift the left side of the scanner. Sometimes when customers put too much pressure on it, for example by leaning on it, this can cause lines. Also check the mirrors, especially the third one. Gently push this one a little bit up.

Maybe the black line erase or independent dot erase adjustments found in SP4 might help? I've never had to use those on black and white machines, but I did max out the dust check adjustment on a color machine where they insisted on using crap paper which caused excessive dusting, and had some success. The dust check adjustment on the color machine is kind of similar to the erase adjustments on your machines, so maybe try those adjustments out if you have time and see if they will help.

Thing is, this recurring problem is always due to dust on the optics. I haven't had a case of a bent scanner frame in months. Cleaning them fixes it...until it un-fixes itself.

Also check the mirrors, especially the third one. Gently push this one a little bit up.
This I'll look into, as I recall it being a little loosey-goosey underneath my cloth the last time. Those L-shaped clips underneath might need a little tension put back into them.

        Any other ideas I'm overlooking?

Unfortunately not. The Kir and Parisian have suffered from this problem as long as I have worked on them. There must be a big panel gap in the scanner somewhere that lets duts in easily.

replace the left scale - I bet the seal for the df contact glass isn't healthy enough to avoid that dust ist leaking through

Change SP 4-903 (ADS Level) from 252 to 180-190.
It lowers the gray-recognition, but if its no problem for the coustumer you dont see black lines anymore for a long time

I've got it on order. I went back to the client, did the scanner alignment, and took a good hard look at the space between the left scale and the glass. Didn't like what I saw. Fingers crossed.

I always order the strip that seals down the slit glass for the 35/45 series, the part number is B3516523. That usually keeps most of the dust and debris out of the optics as it keeps the slit glass from drifting. Also make sure that the left scale is actually sealed.

The new left scale is now installed, and there's a nice solid bond with the original glass. Feeling pretty confident.
