I have a Ricoh MP 171, that is gives a add toner message intermittantly. The toner holder, Drum unit have been replaced. Also got a sc322 error while watching the toner clutch turn with toner holder removed. Any ideas are appreciated

Well,...
1: Sc 322 is because the laser shutter was not opened due to the toner hopper being removed (see that little black switch in where the hopper is supposed to be?)
2: try pushing in the bottle and locking down the hopper handle first and THEN sliding the hopper into place (or try another bottle). Some bottles don`t fit quite right in my experience. -

I had this happen after replacing a polygon mirror motor once. When I put the laser unit back in, that little switch was not quite where it needed to be. Take off that plastic cover and try tweaking that switch, making sure the toner hopper actuates it all the way when inserted.Comment

Check the spring on the toner drive shaft and see if it isn't compressed all the way, if it is, the it's because that shaft twisted in that clutch. Ive never been able to get one of those out although some people have said they can. I usually just bend the crap out of the shaft so it will make contact wih the bottle again and it works...completely stupid design.Comment

The only thing that causes this is, is when the end user installs a bottle with the cap on it. Otherwise the spring is never compressed far enough to cause this issue. So "yes" it's a bit of a design flaw because of the trouble it causes when end users have no common sense, which is not so uncommon. But I've also written some nice invoices for it once I figured out the cause - service agreement or not, because it's a BITCH to fix without breaking the plastic housing, and it's not 'normal' wear and tear.Comment

I have got this message for unknown reasons, one i believe happens when the cust runs the bottle to the point the machine won't even run and it seems like the initial alloted time for toner to add isnt enough to refill the pcu sometimes opening the door a few times or doing an add toner and toner end clear works.
Other reasons i have come across:
1.the mylars inside the hopper have fallen off and its no longer churning toner or its clogged. Take the hopper insert out check the mylars are all intact and clean out the hopper.
2. the wrong toner bottle is installed, this usually makes quite a mess inside the machine as well.
3. The bottle plug from the previous empty bottle is stuck in the hopper.
4. The toner clutch is no longer working.
5. The shutter on the pcu where the toner drops in is broken and not opening when installed.
6. The last thing i see which is likely not the case because you replaced the pcu, but the pcu developer gear breaks off inside so toner is not being moved inside the pcu, this is easy to suspect when a pcu is close to pm and usually you can see the hole where toner drops in is stuffed to the top/overflowing with toner from trying to add it.
I will say about 9 out of 10 times on this machine its none of the above and usually cleaning out the toner hopper and inspecting everything and doing an toner end clear and an add toner once or twice resolves it for me. I have about 60 of these machines in my territory and i get this call about twice a month for what seems to be no mechanical reason.Comment

i have also seen a toner bottle that is oval instead of being round and therefore the toner bottle does not turn.But I cleaned the scan glass.......Comment
