Did you set the DV gap @ a tight .35mm?
Are you using OEM toner and DV?

Looks like a dusting problem. The drum sep area is attracting toner dust.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

We've seen many MP4000/5000 with dusting issues. Our solution has been to add a new drum ground contact.I'm not sure where we get them. It replaces the contact that touches the bearing with one that touches the drum shaft. We also put on some of that black conductive grease. I hope this helps.

We also use the drum ground tab, can be found at http://www.natrading.com/search/product (#02037006 for the older 35/45cpm)
