If you have turned the machine completely off and then back on and the problem continues, the USB circuitry in the controller board went bad, probably because of a power surge or something,
Sounds like you need a new controller board.

I think there's a good chance that the USB and/or network port has been disabled or maybe never enabled in SP mode, but the poster (who sounds like an end user) seems to prefer that we use our Psychic powers to determine everything that led to this condition.
Is it just me, or does that seem to be becoming a very common trend lately?
My psychic powers suggest that he'll be back shortly to ask what I mean
Was the machine installed and printing from usb before, and did the install go bad, or was this only discovered when you attached it to a pc now?
I have come across this issue on MP171/201 controllers where the usb won't work, then if you enter service mode and clear the ncs and ucs memories (and I think printer memory as well) then the functionality returns.

Do the following check.
1st you need to confirm whether machine is been detected/ not detected when usb cable is connected -
What's OS of the client? If it is Win 7 , then right click on the printer driver go to last option 'properties'. see whether Printer is shown as unavailable or available. If unavailable then your machine is not been detected. Now change the USB cable and chk (i believe you already did). see if it is detected or not.
Also chk on the device manager (perform scan for hardware changes)
Check the settings of SP5985-002 USB. Turn it OFF and then restart the machine, Then return this setting back to ON position and then again restart the machine.
My friend did you see whether it is working on N/W printing? TRY IT WiTH CROSSOVER/STRAIGHT(for WIN7) CONNECTION.
If everything is done - I conclude its a Controller Board error. because its a simple USB Port detection error. Replace the Controller board.
