MPC 2051 Groaning noise from fusing area - SOLVED!

We have had a situation where this range of colour MFP develop a loud groaning noise whenever the fusing unit turns.

The field engineers have tried all kinds of creative thinking and have resorted to replacing the whole unit as it then shuts up.

I have done some R&D and found that it is caused by the hotroller (which is one of these thin film designs) that does not have a "frame" of its own, but runs around a slightly smaller metal frame. This contains what looks like some form of lube cloth/bar which does not seem to do much for the machine as we have had ones fail within the first year op field operation.

I proceeded to remove and strip the hotroller assembly, then cleaned the inner "frame and coated it with a thin coat of MR MCKANIC Litium grease (stable to 200 degrees C) although the machine should not see more than 120 degrees C.

I re-assembled and am currently testing, but it seems that we have got it sorted.

Will report back after some more inclusive testing.

Happy to report that all is good so far this side - the noise is still gone and no side effects yet.

I have attached the proc I wrote to help make it easier - for those interested.

      Good stuff thanks.
Rule of thumb with Ricoh machines is grease up the bearings in all fuser unit as they run noisy

      Cheers

        Thank you Polarbear
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.

Thank you OZE - my bad!

It seems as if there are different systems around the world w.r.t. RTB's. As I see comments about these sometimes, and we then don't have these or the other way around!

I always thought that there is only one system, but this does not seem to be the case.

              Great write up Polarbear.

Two notes from the cheap seats.

First, I don't take the sleeve all the way off. Just slide it off to the edge, but never take it all the way off. This helps prevent issues with the plate slipping out of position and potential damage when putting the sleeve back on. Once you have most of the inside greased, you can put the one end back on, take the other off, slide the sleeve a little bit to get what was covered.

The other note is to make sure no grease gets on the lamps.

Polarbear, great job on the solution. Just one question, will barrieta grease works as well as for lubrication?

Here is the bulletin on vibration sounds from the fuser. Ran into it once before.
