Our old rep said it's huge in Japan. (No pun intended) The units were to be replace by customers as tool free units (kinda) to keep service to a minimum. I don't know if Ricoh US got that memo or not, but personally I don't think it turned out that well. Granted, that may have just been smoke he was blowing...

When I was training on the Toshiba 702 (1974 or so) the KO manuals were written like operators were technicians. Taking things apart. As was explained to me, key ops in Japan WERE like techs, they cleaned tires, they changed drums. Only rarely did they call a tech. But the US market was different, Sally Secretary was not going to break a nail when she could call someone else. Possibly the same today over there.Comment
