Line on scans... all machines, mostly

    Good afternoon/morning

Had a couple of customers call up to complain about a line on the right hand vertical of a scan. I've seen this on a few machine B/W and colour. Now I know it's something that the machines do, basically the machines reduce the image and scan edge to edge. What they are seeing is the edge of the paper on the scan. I've been through all the settings, user and SP and tweeked just about everything. I even got in touched with Ricoh support. After two calls to their desk they escalated it to the next level. They called me back and said it could be the software they are using, I wasn't buying into that one. They scan in pdf format, that sort of put them on the backfoot there. Waiting to hear back from them now.

Have any of my learned friends here come across this, or even better found a solution to this issue?

I thank you and wish you all a pleasant day

You can try to scan to a folder on a laptop and see what happens then.

Here's how I've dealt with it (on a C3500/4500 as an example):
      Scanner
      scan settings
      Edit
      erase border
set to 0.1 -0.2 inch (or whatever satisfies)
      OK

...and then do the "program as defaults" thing for the current settings to lock it in.

      Hope it helps.

You could try mucking about with the trail edge erase, it's usually in the Peripheral SPs (6-***) under d/f registration if it's doing it through the document feeder. Usually experimenting with that has solved the issue for me. If it's doing it off the glass then I dunno, short of messing around with the actual scanner SPs

Also check the height of the scanner from glass. If gap is large light may enter.

ADF front to rear adjust in SP mode. Check both scanner sp and copier sp.

Copier won't print 2mm on front to rear, lead or trail edges.

There is also a magnification adjustment under both.

I recommend adjusting the ADF copy function first, then scanner ADF.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

              Hi All

              Thank you for your replies.

Just like to point out that no amount of adjustment of margins/reg. etc. will have any effect on this. If you scan a document it will always reduce the document and 'over scan', for lack of a better word, leaving a line which in actual fact is the edge of the page. I bet if you step up to any Ricoh machine now and scan a doc and look at it on screen it will have this line. Just out of interest, this does not happen when you scan into document storage.....

This line is about 4 to 5 mm form the right hand margin, a lot of these adjustments only give you a maximum of 3%, some only 1%. I had considered adjusting the margins, but as you can see 5mm is a big shift. The next thing I would get called out for is the image not centred on the page.

Still waiting for the Ricoh guys to get back to me, will keep you posted

I've attached a scan I've done on our machine we use at the office...
P.S. on our machine you can even see the top of the page as a dotted line

              Cheers All

First of all, let me just say, that's one kick ass setlist you have there! It's as if you hacked my MP3 player!
My suggested adjustment (above) is not a "margin shift". Did you try it, because I've done it dozens of times to solve this exact issue?
It only takes a matter of seconds to set

Pure genius!! I tried it on our machine and it seems to have done the trick, will pop down to the customer and try theirs.

I'll be gigging that set list on Friday... You have a fine taste in music

                  Thanks a mill.

The solution might be found in the options displayed in the Acrobat print dialog?

I think you might find that the customers have upgraded their Adobe Reader to a new version. When they do, the default setting in the print dialog window changes to 'choose paper source by PDF size' or 'Reduce/Enlarge Page' in the size options. They will have to change it by unchecking the box and (I believe) select 'fit' or 'shrink'. Ricoh MFP's overscan several millimeters by design, but you normally don't see the edges because the software on the pc side trims it normally. They only have to change it once, it will keep that configuration going forward.

                        Addendum:
*I see Iowatech beat me to the punch on a probable solution.

                          Hi Cable guy.

Have a look at your area selection under SP mode 5807 and see if it's correct. Different regions different sizes.
If not have a look at your margin shift.

                          Hope it helps.
