[Misc] Ricoh MPC2050 color registration problem

I am working on a Ricoh MPC2050. Customer complaint is color registration is off. It certainly is, the magenta is out approx 3-4mm down when running copy through with 11" leading edge. I tried to run color registration in maintenance. It tries but then a message comes up saying it could not be performed.

I pulled the transfer belt and it looks good but I could be missing something.

Also I ran and printed the auto color calibration and the magenta overlaps the cyan by about 3mm.

I'm still thinking transfer belt but how and why would it happen?

Am I off? Where else should I look???

Black prints perfectly and everything else on the machine works great.

Also machine has relatively low copy count, only 8400 in color.

    Thanks for the help.

This might be stupid, but have you turned the machine completely off and back on? Sometimes storms and nearby construction or anything that disturbs the local power utility can cause surges, which will cause bad data to be input to the machine's operating memory, which can cause all manner of undesirable operations. If nothing important is damaged, turning the machine completely off for a few minutes and then back on will clear that.
Unless the transfer belt is obviously damaged, it probably has very little to do with this problem. If you can find them without further damaging the machine, you would probably be better served making sure the ID sensors are clean.
Anyway, good luck, and let us know how this works out if you can.

Hi Iowatech, thanks for the reply

Yes I have powered off, unplugged and restarted, problem is still there.

ID sensors? Any idea where they are on the Ricoh MPC2050

      Thanks

So you haven't done the line position adjustment yet?

Thank you sandmanmac. How did our color guy not know that? He will now!

          Worked perfectly.

I had a c5501 about a year ago that kept getting out of alignment. Techs had run the SP alignment & replaced the ITB twice, which all seemed to fix it, but it would re-appear within a couple of weeks. Swapped out the Music assy. (ID sensors) and it never came back.

                  Hi Redneckstylin;

I was told they are hard to get to. Is this true and where are they, how do I clean them?

                  Thanks

If you have time I would recommend removing the whole right hand door, taking special care of the guides as they become brittle with exposure to the fuser heat.

Open the right hand door and the transfer roller assembly, remove the black plate covering the sensors. Two screws, both different so remember where they go. Remove the screws holding the sensor to the frame, and pull the sensors towards you. Clean the sensors and all around the holes they look through with a damp cloth.

If you have time you can also remove the transfer belt assembly and clean around the metal plates, they usually collect purple waste toner. Put it all back together, make sure you tighten the sensor black plate, sometimes if it is loose it can partially cover the sensors giving an SC400.

Make sure you do all this with the machine turned off, of course.

You can remove the right door if you want to, but there is no need.

Simply unhook the front and back brackets that stop the door in the open position (black clip on each). You can then swing the door open far enough to get to what you need. Warning! Do not allow the door to get to the 90 degree mark (if closed is 0 degrees). I usually put a trash can or my tool bag under the door to support it while I have it open.

You then unhook the front bracket for the transfer unit (1 black clip) and that will swing open nice and wide.

Take off the black cover (screw front and back and note they are different as other posters have mentioned). You can then remove the ID sensor board (6 screws) clean as necessary and also clean where the sensors "look through" the holes to the belt.

I have also had these sensors be perfectly clean and have the machine still throw SC400's. It is not unheard of that the ID sensor board can be bad. Just need a new one.

I prefer not to remove the whole ID sensor board. Pull the Waste toner bottle #2, then the Image transfer belt. It gives you nice access to all around the ID sensors to make sure you get them clean along with the surrounding area. Depending on how dusty the environment is this method will give you a quite a bit of time before they need cleaning again. Important to clean bottom side of ITB belt where the ID sensors look (tends to collect toner and dust) and will contaminate the sensors quickly if neglected.
