having intermittent "Install Toner" message on display. The machine will fax and scan but not copy. to reset machine i open and close the door and it will start to work again. the machine stays the the toner is 38% but will do this with a newer cartridges as well. I have opened up the toner cartridge and the cartridge is still about half full. I have also cleaned the contacts on the machine with an eraser but did not help. any suggestions?

Maybe look at the chuck on the toner bottle drive motor and make sure it lines up with the aft end of your toner bottle? (Heh, got bitten by that one a few times back in the day.) Or. that chuck is spring loaded, make sure it moves properly? -
