    transfer unit

    hi to all,

the transfer belt is dirty because the transfer belt blade can't clean the belt anymore. everytime i replace a new transfer belt blade the machine makes a few copies then gives a RRRRRRRRRRRRRR sound because the transfer belt gets stuck in the blade and can't turn. the belt works fine using the old blade except that it's dirty. when i put baby powder on the transfer belt, it works fine for a while then the problems comes back. i even put silicone oil on the transfer belt but not a good solution. i would like to ask for your solutions/suggestions to this?

model is ricoh aficio 1045 to 3045.

    thank you.

I always take a little toner from the hopper and gently rub it along the top and edge of the blade. It takes away the tackiness of the material of the blade. I do the same thing for the drum blade as well in this model and the smaller ones.

      thank you rthonpm.

i also encountered this problem on machines that has not been used for many months. it looks like the transfer belt is too dry to slide the blade smoothly. putting powder on the belt can make it run for a while only. any other solutions?

I have never had, or heard of this problem. It sounds to me more like the transfer belt drive rollers are contaminated with built up 'baked on' toner and sticky from NEGLECT -particularly the bias roller. Take off the belt, clean the rollers and lube all the bushings. ALSO, replace the belt if necessary

I had this problem back in the day. I think we might have had a bad batch of toner then, though. The only way I could avoid that problem at that time was to replace the blade and the belt at the same time, and coat the belt with drum powder.

The 1035 had a plastic mylar strip near the transfer blade while the 2035 and later models had a felt strip. Check and make sure all of your plastic strips are intact and not getting caught on the belt during its motion. Worst comes to worst, you may need to replace the transfer case.

Its been some years since I have seen this, but the company I was working for at the time was using Katun toner causing the transfer blade to grab the belt ( not enough lubrication from the toner ). It took us a few to figure it out, and it was a couple months before Katun acknowledged the problem.

interesting. i never thought toner could cause this problem. thank you. i tried putting silicon oil to lubricate the belt but it's not good. i will try the drum powder as mentioned by iowatech. is there anything else i could use to lubricate the belt?

It sounds like you need a new transfer unit and transfer clutch if there is a "rrrr " sound at warm up

It would probably be pretty messy to coat the transfer belt with toner, but you might try putting some toner on the working edge of the new belt cleaning blade. I suppose even used toner would work for that.
Or, you might try replacing the belt cleaning blade first, then reassembling the unit and manually rotating the gear so that the new blade collects toner from the old belt, and then install the new belt. I've never tried that with the transfer assembly, but it works really well when replacing the drum and drum cleaning blade.

If it is the toner issue causing the problem you're having, unfortunately, even if you find a better way to lubricate the transfer belt/blade other than toner or dusting powder, the problem will return. All of the old toner must be removed from the system, including the recycle auger section on the top half of the pcu. Developer should be changed also ( you may be able to save it by running some sky shots to deplete the bad toner from it ) but make sure new toner is installed and it is from a different lot.

thank you for all your replies.
i don't think it's a toner issue otherwise all my 3045's would have the same problem. the transfer unit was working well until the belt became dirty because the belt cleaning blade can't clean it anymore. the rrrrr sound only happens after belt cleaning blade replacement. also there are times that after replacement of the blade it runs well but after making a few hundred copies the problem occurs (i wonder why?). i'll try iowatech's solution. thank you.

Replace the Belt and The Blade as a pair always and you don't even need to put powder on the Blade if its a Genuine one but a little bit of katun powder wouldn't harm it.

There appears to be something wrong with the transfer unit itself, like the cleaning blade mounting bracket or something in that area. I don't think I've ever had a transfer blade flip on this model series. Are you using junky aftermarket parts? Also, after the first RRRRRRRRR, you might have some transfer unit gear damage, enough to cause the problem now even with a good belt and blade.

you will need to replace the transfer belt and blade soon since you put silicone oil on the belt and probably damage the blade with the oil, I use baby powder as a lubricant for drums & belts.
