Looks like a problem I sometimes get on MPC2500s where the laser shutter plate would not open fully, causing a fade in the main scan direction. Check if anything is impeding the path between the laser and the drum.

First thing that came to my mind to was the laser shield is blocked either with dust/toner or the shutter, otherwise its just a lack of toner in the pcu which might have resolved it self after messing with the pcu it may have added toner to fill after that, all to one side though does seem like like laser blockage.

It is possible that the transfer roller bushing inside the transfer assy became stuck down. This will cause uneven colour distribution. When the unit was removed for inspection, the bushing may have returned to its correct position, therefore preventing the issue from being found. I have had the same issue on the MPC2500, MPC3500 and MPC4500 ranges.
