(NON RICOH) WIFI Printserver with Ricoh MFP

With the sales of tablets making laptops look stupid, a lot of customers are having to add WIFI to their network layout. I am looking at alternatives than the EXTREMELY expensive and foolishly intricate Ricoh wifi solutions.

There are quite a few self contained WIFI solutions that plug right into the USB port, and as such don't hog the NIC port or require other hardware changes.

Problem is this: None seem to do compatibility testing with Ricoh.

Has anyone tested these with any level of success?

I am looking at D-link DPR-1040 and Edimax ED-PS1206U amoungst others.

    Links:
    D-Link UK | DPR-1040 Wireless G Multifunctional Print Server, 10/100Mbs 1 USB Port
POWERFUL | WIRED NETWORKING | SOLUTIONS Print Servers

    I would appreciate any feedback.

The main question is whether or not the wireless network is able to talk to the wired network. If it's setup right, then the wireless IP range is a subset of the overall network, or subnetted out as a separate range, but still part of the contiguous network (say an Ethernet range of 10.11.12.x and a wireless IP range of 10.11.13.x, if the subnet mask is set to 255.255.254.0 then you've got a contiguous network). If that's the case then you don't need any kind of wireless print server or any of that garbage. Overall, using a wireless access point and having it pull addresses from an existing DNS server isn't that difficult to do.

Wireless in the office and Ricoh's "Smart Device Print" app is all you need. Works great.

--->>> NOTE!!! --->>> "Smart Device Print" *REQUIRES* that the Ricoh/Savin device have Postscript3 -OR- AirPrint driver functionality! This is per the top of Page 6 in the user documentation.

Sorry, but you couldn't be more wrong. All you need is the app. It will work on any of the models on this list and a few more models that have been added since this list's publication.

And I will have to disagree with that -at least at this point.

I'm just learning about this app now from this thread, and the only model I have available at the moment at my home office is an MP161. Without a P/S 3 card installed, every job tells me to "select a printer that supports PDF direct print" and printing is impossible, until I installed a P/S 3 card, and now it also shows in the printer properties within the app that "PDF direct print is supported" and printing is a breeze.
So if what you say is true, please provide the steps for your 'workaround'

Otherwise, I've been using "printer share premium" which works pretty well, however it doesn't support all the models (or ANY colour models) in the Ricoh lineup, but works pretty well for monochrome printing with virtually any driver selected.

All you need is wireless router with bridge function.

Thank-You for your confirmation!....The app relies on PS3 (PDF DirectPrint) AND Bonjour for printer discovery and use!

I have used this adapter on many Ricoh's with no problems...it does take up the ethernet port and the speed difference is not noticeable with normal print jobs...this is dependent on their wireless router.

I have used WiFi gaming adapters for a very good cheap solution.
They are one node and the copier makes 2 nodes.
Set the static IP on the copier one octet above or below the Adapter that is also static and include those IP's in the Scope settings in the router.

Have 5 out there that I never hear from, until they mess with the router.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?
