Ricoh PDF version

Hello there

We have a customer that had Xerox machines and now they have Ricoh and used Paperport 9 but it doesn't deal well with the PDF files Ricoh creates.

Anyone knows which PDF version Ricoh machines create when scanning to PDF or how can I check it?
Is it possible to change the version?

SP 5990-5, diagnostic report. This will give you the PDF firmware number and version.

I believe it is PDF/A-1, but I assume this only due to the fact that version PDF/A-2 came out in 2011.

Further inspection will be needed, but I would again assume that level b is the most likely supported level.

Open a PDF in Adobe Reader, then under "File", select "Properties".

The version will be shown toward the bottom of the page.

Or, of you're geeky (like me!), open the same file in Notepad or a similar app. The version will be contained somewhere in the first line or two.

There is freeware on the web that will allow you to change the version, either up or down. Sorry, I don't remember what it's called, but it was easy to Google at the time I found it.

As KenB said, right click on the file and select properties. Under the PDF tab you will find the version produced by the mfp (1.5,1.6,1.7). You might want to check the mfp compression and encryption settings and fuss with them a bit to see if you get better results.

Just as a FYI (and perhaps a teeny bit off topic), version 1.3 would be produced by Acrobat 4, 1.4 by Acrobat 5, etc...

Typically, manufacturers tend to lag behind here, claiming it's to maintain compatibility, so don't be surprised if some brands create much older or newer versions than others.

I once had an attorney client get all over us because the courts were rejecting the PDFs (non - Ricoh, BTW), as being too old.

Using a program to scan slows down the scan upload time.
Twain scanning went away a long time ago.
Twain uses the memory of the machine, scanning to email or folder uses the HDD of the machine to spool the document.
Gives them more functionality and control of their documents.
Using a newer machine they need to learn how to use a computer better.
Push scan to email because they know how to use their email.
They can copy paste or just move file.
It is easy to name the file before they send it.

mikadonovan, after reading the knowlegable responses to the original question. make a mental note to avoid pdf questions as you are an idiot. wtf, my whole day has been like this.

They use Scan-to-folder. They have Paperport to fetch the scanned files from each user's network folder and process the file afterwards.

Sorry, it's obvious how to know the PDF version of a file. My boss was all over me so I didn't think right.
Will try to mess around with the settings, like teebee1234 said and see if that changes anything.

I've used Paperport 9 for years, because it really is that old, and for what I use it for it works perfectly. Have them use the built in pdf printer in Paperport to create a pdf file in an easy to find location on their computer, then they can send that file to the Ricoh.
Make sure they have the current version of at least Acrobat Reader installed on their computer, too. Anything less causes sadness and futility. At least for me.
