Well, I thought I better let you all know how I managed to resolve the matter.
Scanning to email was always the best option for this customer, as it provided them with pdf attachments which they can archive or send on to clients etc.
In the end, I installed a free mail server on a PC, and configured the firewall and AV to pass on the usual mail ports. I set up each member of the (small) company with an "internal" email address, and the copier now scans to email perfectly.
The advantage is that the email from the copier never leaves the building, which previously it did (they had no on-site mail server, relying on their ISP's mail server), It also proves that there was nothing wrong with the machine, it was purely something that changed when the ISP upgraded the companies server - like I thought.
For reference, the free mail server software was hMailServer, and was relatively easy to set up. There is even a section in the help file about setting up an "internal mail server".

Now thats all sorted, I just have to sort the regular "First Transfer" jam they keep getting
Bet its one of the clutches/solenoids that engage the transfer section. Had the same issues several years ago, ended up replacing a few. Can't remember the details, sorry.
Are you their I.T guy as well as their copier tech? Damn, you didn't half go to some lengths to resolve an issue that they created in the first place, hope they were paying for that time, but the fact that they are still running on an ancient piece of junk like a 1224c shows how often they like opening their wallet. Do them and yourself a favour and get one of your sales suits to sell them a used MPC3500 or something, I guarantee they'll thank you for it as you can use the following sales points.
1/Produces colour copies at 30 pages a minute rather than 30 minutes per page (with accompanying clunks)
2/Has a more up to date controller that might actually converse with OS's produced after 2003
3/Doesn't leak oil or require an oil reservoir refilling.
4/The copies/prints actually look quite good most of the time, rather than looking crap most of the time and degrading to absolute crap when something is actually wrong.
