    Aficio 1018, wants toner

Customer got for his Aficio-1018 a toner bottle type 1250D but machine kept saying "Add Toner"

After getting the right (?) type 1220D it still wants the toner to be replaced. Immediately after the proper bottle was inserted it started to make "adding" noises but the add toner sign does not go away.

Is toner type 1250D different from type 1220D except the bottle size of course?

Any known possible reasons why machine is showing that behaviour?

    Have no experience with Ricoh.

    Hi Hans,
Check the gears in the dev unit. The gears for the Augers wear out, usually as a result of incorrect procedure when replacing developer in the past.

Ps, Also check toner supply motor is turning the bottle correctly. You can do so by removing inner top cover and watching.

        Thanks Mohan.

So toner type 1250D is more or less compatible to type 1220D?

Haven't got toner comparison info, however, if the bottle drive dogs compare favourably, the motor should be driving the bottle round in the machine. But be careful as I have had experience of customers filling old toner bottles with toner from a different machine with disastrous results. The different wax content results in toner not fusing properly and destroying hot rollers.

Ps. Forgot one important thing! make sure the toner bottle inner bung from the old bottle is not stuck in toner unit chuck. Always happens!

              Hi there!
Be very careful with the toner of the "KIR"-series. The 1018 uses Developer Typ 19, The later models Typ 28. If there is 1270-toner in the 1018, the developer will die within some hundred copies!
              Greetings...

I have had to replace the drum, kit and developer to get rid of the add toner problem after checking the gears and toner chuck and motor for problems

1250 Toner is for A1013 IIRC - that bottle is smaller/shorter (A4 machine) and wouldn't get driven by the toner motor if somebody accidently put it inside a A1018 - hard to image that something might have broke the drive. Perhaps there is that little bottle cap left in the hopper (but then the customer would have complained about a toner mess).

Defective PCU/drive gears might be a good tip.

Replace the toner supply unit. The mylars inside fall off causing a blockage. Seen it a bunch of times.

This checks two things. Is the motor turning and is the bottle turning. I have a instances where the bottle was not turning. Pushed back slightly on the bottle and it started to turn.

Mohan, you hit the nail on the head. There was a cap from the previous bottle stuck in the opening.

Thanks for all your help guys.
