Mp 161 171 paper tray selection

I've tested it on at least two different machines: when printing legal size job, one machine ALWAYS screams to use proper size paper, even though in the driver I tell it to use tray2 (legal) and print on legal, document size on legal.
Another machine just ignores everything and prints legal on letter in landscape mode, never attempting to pickup from tray 2.
I enabled tray auto switching in printer features, system, settings, too.
And when attempting to copy from legal to legal via ADF, unless you tell the machine to use tray2, it always prints on tray1 - no sense sensing paper size through ADF.
All firmwares have been upgraded to the latest.
Shame the MFP can't do what cheapo Samsung or HP from Staples can do it without any additional setup.
    Any solutions?

Are you printing from a Microsoft product? If so, check the page setup (tray select and paper sizes), this overrides the printer driver settings. Also, is the paper tray settings set to the correct paper size?

Go to the printer settings - system and set Auto Continue to Direct.

I would just add that i always set "sub paper size" to "on" in printer settings. This should correct the issue of "paper size" mismatch, when the size is just slightly off.
ALSO..you're right, there is no auto paper select on this machine. Set a default tray, and manually select the other one when you want to use it. I never considered it to be a big deal myself.
You didn't even mention the 'scanner' settings when scanning a legal size, there's several other steps to take for that too

On machine 1 are you sure that it is screaming for correct size paper and not for the correct type of paper (i.e. plain, recycled, letter head, etc.).
