I assume that the customer has to load thicl paper when they need to use it. Set the driver to Machine Command. When the customer loads the thick paper they wish to use, they need to set the paper type in the tray to match. When they take it out, change the tray setting back to normal.

Thats exactly what they are doing, but on the older ranges the paper tray didnt need to be selected to thick - the machine would listen to the driver as it took priority over what was selected on the tray.

Basically, there must be a way to print on thick without changing the paper tray on the machine. The older machines did it - why would Ricoh take away this functionality?

All the customer wants to do is put 5 pages of thick paper in the tray, go back to the desk and print on thick, go to the machine and get their paper. All without changing any paper tray settings.
