    ricoh hard drive repair

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this, I will give it a shot anyway. Does anyone have any information on software that can look at the Ricoh hard drives that go bad? My theory is that most of them are not physically bad, maybe some bad sectors or a bad header block but windows does not allow me get beyond what type of hdd it is. Any thoughts???

    Thanks in advance,

Just go to the HDD makers website and they typically have free software available. We mostly use the Hitachi and WD disk utility's.

If you have hard drive issues just format the drive and try again

If formatting by the machine doesn't work, you can try to connect the HDD to a PC and try to format it there. If even the PC can't do it, the HDD must be defective.

Try installing it in a PC and use SpinRite in maintenance mode to thoroughly scan the surface of the disk. If the drive is recoverable, SpinRite will recover it.

Thanks all. I have tried formatting on the machine, installed on both a pc and laptop, I could see it in device manage but no where else and was unable to do anything with it. I will give spinrite a shot and see if that works.

            Thanks again.

If you can see it in device manager then there is a good chance its ok. With the hdd connected to a PC just right click on My Computer and select manage, then go to disk manager and hopefully you will see it there. If you can you should then be able to format.

Once you have done that it should be good to go back but you will have to run SP 5832 after you have fitted.

If disk manager shows the device as being Unhealthy, consider it useful as a paper weight only.

                    Re: ricoh hard drive repair

i use an external docking bay, that hooks up to my laptop via usb.
if the drive is seen in device manager you might have to set active partition and give it a drive letter so you then right click
it and do a thorough disc scan for errors complete wth repair bad sectors..
i use to repair laptops and found that it wasnt worth time n effort to repair harddrives..
if its a corrupt sector and a scan remedies it ..all good..but drives are so cheap these dayss..
i remember SCSI DRIVES costing 500 to 600 bucks...in da day
