    Ricoh MP 4001

When a new cartridge of toner is put in this machine before it is asked for, should the system status state that a new cartridge was installed, or should I have waited for it to call for toner? Thank you for any help given.

No it won't indicate a new bottle is installed. The toner for the 4000/4001 does not have a chip on it that the machine reads and writes to. The toner amount is calculated from toner motor on time and toner near end is based on vt,vsp and toner motor on time. So if you pop a new bottle in, the machine hasn't reset any toner bottle data if the add toner light is not on.

The only way the MP 4001 knows when it is out of toner is when the density sensor calls for toner and the density stays the same, i.e. no toner was added.

On every one of these machines I see, there's a tiny graphic on the bottom of the touch panel displaying how much toner is left in the bottle. So technically the machine does update you when you install a new bottle in that the graphic changes to a full bottle of toner.

I checked the service manual and even though SP 5061 is present for turning on the toner remaining icon, the toner bottle does not have a memory chip to store the remaining toner amount. The only way the machine has to determine if the toner bottle has been replaced is for it to prompt for toner and when the toner add cycle is ran after closing the front door, the toner density in the developer comes back up to normal. It does not however have a way to know if the bottle put in the machine is new or not.

Even on a color machine, the RFID chip only gives an estimate of the remaining toner in the bottle and is used for the toner near end (17% remains) message. The toner out message is based on the toner end sensor on the back of the toner hoppers for color toners and the toner density sensor for black.
