Which printer driver have you installed?
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

To my knowledge in Windows 8 the user codes are input from the Printer Properties section of the driver under Advanced Options. Select the Driver Encryption and then Encryption Code would be the user code. Should not have to enter the code anywhere else. If it won't save the code you input then it could be a permissions issue since this is under the Printer "Properties" and not the "Preferences". You have to have elevated rights to administer Properties especially in the super duper locked down Windows 8.

Just installed MP1600 PCL5e driver on Win 8, and set the user code exactly as you described, and used it to print to an MP161 -no issues
