[Error Code] MP C4502 - Paper Misfeed J018 ONLY when printing from PC?

Hi there! I'm having an issue with a MP C4502 in the field - if I print a multiple page document from PC to the copier, the copier will always jam, 5% of time on page 1, 95% of time on page 2. The error on the screen is Paper Misfeed, and error code is J018. The first page will exit the copier OK, the second will be half way out of the exit, and third will be about half way through the registration roller, just starting to enter the fuser. It jams the same if I send it duplex or one-sided.

The weird thing is, if I print lists or do copy jobs off the copier itself, I never have a problem. I can do 5,10,20 page copy jobs, and no issues. The second I try from PC, paper misfeed.

I've tried cleaning the fusing entrance sensor as well as the exit sensor. One time, immediately after cleaning the entrance sensor, I got it to work for 2-3 jobs, but after a few minutes of the copier sitting idle, the issue came back.

Copier is connected through network, if that helps at all...

I do have a fusing unit and separation/transfer unit on order, but am open to any and all help...it'll be a day or two before I get back to the machine to replace the parts.

What you need to do is find out what is different between print jobs and copy jobs. Is the paper tray different? Does the machine have a bridge unit, and only print jobs go through it? You could have a bad bridge unit door switch which is a known issue. (Try tapping the bridge unit as you do a copy job to trip the switch)
Print out an SMC report (SP 5-990-4) and get the latest jam locations, it will narrow it down to a sensor. If you don't know how to get an SMC report then you might need a Ricoh trained tech to help you. Since I don't know your skillset I am reluctant to tell you how to get into SP mode yourself.

I did print an SMC report, the majority of the jams were at 018 at 150 times, and 017 at 105 times. I don't believe it has a bridge unit - the machine doesn't have a finisher.

Check paper size output on your PC.

J018 is a fusing entrance sensor on error. Could be sensor, could be a bind in the PTR, Could be a problem with the fusing unit drive motor especially if they are printing with the driver set for thick paper. Motor runs slower for thick paper and I have seen motor speed be off when running at slower speed. Could also be a bind in the fusing unit itself causing the motor to run slower.

Your printing setting might set wrong.

My suggest is clear all memory to set as default setting.

Or

Your pc software overwrite your pcl driver setting.

Like microsoft word page setup will overwrite the driver setting also.

One thing has popped into my head, try removing and lubricating the paper exit assembly as sometimes they get old and bind up. I have seen this multiple times on MPC4000's, to which the MPC4502 is a similar engine.

Also the PC might be double siding the documents due to the driver defaulting to duplex. See if you get more jams when double siding from the copier.

I tried printing from notepad since I thought it'd be simpler formatting, but the error came up again. Print driver is set to print to letter, paper is plain letter. If I do duplex copies on the copier, no issues there...I'll be honest, I don't have a ton of experience on these machines yet, so you guys are a ton of help. One thing I was wondering about the fusing entrance sensor - I've checked the status in sp mode with the paper misfeed message and paper still stuck in the copier, and J018 shows status of 1 - I didn't check it without paper there, should the status show 0?

Brainwave.... check that the tray orientation and size agrees with what is actually loaded in the drawer. Sometimes the tray is not set to 'auto detect' and instead has a hard coded size. This WILL cause jams.

Looks like we may have this one figured - I replaced the fusing unit yesterday, as well as the separation unit as the transfer roller was worn enough to warrant replacement - I was able to do 5,10,20 page prints from PC with no issues - duplex and single sided!

Still doesnt explain why it only occurred on print jobs. Printing or copying, same paper feed.

hey , good day i have this same error J018 with a Mp3503. in my case the paper keeps stoping at the fuser entrance, i had a bad fuser film initialy , got a rebuilt one that only worked for one week , i came in one morning powered up the machine where got a j018 jam . i noticed that the gears that actuates thr blade in the fusing film was stuck . on opening the fuser i noticed the circular slider that moves the blade inside the fusing film was jammed , so i changed it and got the gears and the blade actuating properly . re assembled the fuser. placed it in the printer and got the same J018 jam. i got frustrated and bought a new fuser i still keep getting the j018 jam even with the new fuser. can anybody help me ?, could it be an issue with the board ?... the fuser motor when tested in service mode works in high speed and slow speed . any ideas?
