To slimslob's point, make sure ports 137, 139 and 445 (indound and outbound) are set to allow the MFP's IP address to go through. Under "advanced rules" in firewall settings,go to each respective port (137,139 and 445). You will see "public", "private" and "domain" beside each port. Make sure printer and file sharing are allowed (enabled), then open the port and enter the IP address under "scope". When in doubt do this for all three ports (137,139 and 445) public, private and domain BOTH inbound and outbound. I have never had to change any encription settings either.

To SargeNZ point, you may have a dns issue and therefore have to use the clients IP address instead of the computer name. I set an MP171 up for SMB scanning the other day. For some reason the customer had Kapersky firewall loaded (Russian product). Under his instructions I turned it off to make SMB work. Two days later I get a call saying scanning stopped working. I show up to find someone had installed Norton and did not configure it to allow the MFP's IP address to flow through. I set up the Norton to allow it and it worked again. WIN 7 does not require firmware upgrade but WIN 8 does. I think the file is the LRC0451 that allows WIN 8 and server 2K12 scanning.

Re Using password protected file share on PC.
Win7/8 will not allow you to scan-to-PC/file share with a user name an empty password field.
The share user name password field must contain a valid password.

Nortons360/Security will ping the network every 15 -30 minutes an update its machine IP addresses.
It's quicker to allow the MFD IP address in the Norton software immediately.

For some unknown reason WinXX.X firewall can shift a Network identity from private to public and visaviser.
Its a good idea to allow ports for all network domains. One PC MFD can be on a totally different network domain to another. I've see this with WinVista and Win7 PC's on the same ethernet allocating themselves to both private and public firewall domains within their own network software.
