    Load paper tray 1

This should be easy, but it hasn't been.
Mpc 6501 load paper tandem tray 1. Control panel shows no paper loaded. Original call the tray rear lift cable was broken. I replace the cable however it still didnt work. There are no sc codes no reset tray message and no wrench on tray. Load paper on the right side and the tray will rise and stop at the top and stay there. With no paper loaded the tray remains down. Covering only the paper sensor on the bottom plate the tray will rise then lower. When loading paper on the left side of the tandem tray it will show paper on the left side then shift it to the right, rise then remain up.
These 4 senarios are the same as a properly working machine. Trays 2 &3 work fine.

    What I have done.
Checked for paper in the connector. (There is none.)
Swapped feed heads 1 and 2. No change.
Replaced right side half of the tandem tray with a used working tray.
Tried a paper feed board and vbcu.

    Next step harness?

    Any thoughts?

Harness would be a good shout, but I'd check input modes for all sensors in the feed station and LCT first, i.e. tray set sensor, paper height sensors etc.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

Anytime I have to replace a damaged lift, I replace both as a set. If one is obviously damaged, the other might have some damage.

Possibly a peice of torn paper stuck in the electrical connector behind the tandem tray. Had this fault 2 or 3 times.
Also check the paper hieght lever has not been bent out of shape. Will over drive the lift motors.
I've had to physically heat this lever and remould it back into the correct shape.

I can't remember the full scenario but something in the back of the brain says I did have this problem some time ago. If its the same problem it turned out to be the spring that hold the pick up roller in the correct place had snapped so when the tray rose up its height wasn't detected properly. Check to see if the pick up roller on the tandem tray is in the same place as the others.
