Seriously, is there a way to replace the fuser coupling gear without taking apart 90% of the back of the machine?

Yep. Install a different machine with a undamaged gear
I feel your pain, I had to deal with a fuser drive gearbox on a 1022 a couple of weeks ago. Disassembly sucked, reassembly was damn near impossible. Bring your lunch and make sure you have several beers in the fridge at home for afterward when you reevaluate your chosen profession.
