Aficio MP C4500, no can scan!

I just got an Aficio MP C4500 from the BC Government, who seem to be getting rid of a lot of them all at once, so I'm hoping they aren't just dumping lemons.

When I was putting it through its paces, I noticed that the "Scanner" button tried to bring up Java. I went into "Extended Feature Settings" -> "Change Allocation," and sure enough, Java had been assigned to the "Scanner" button. I cleared that allocation, and now the "Scanner" button does nothing.

The copier works fine, and I can fax to disk, so the scanner hardware appears to be working fine.

Looking at version.txt, it does not appear to have scanner firmware. I've seen other postings of firmware that listed "Scanner" on them. Am I reading this right?

Also, I also went into SP mode, and SP-7-801-255 (Firmware Version) shows only dashes in both columns next to "Scanner".

So, it seems I don't have firmware for the Scanner function, no? As far as I can tell, it's not an extra-cost option, or the button wouldn't be there, right?

At this point, is there anything I (a retired electronics tech, but not credentialed with Ricoh) can do?

Thanks for any advice offered! This is for a not-for-profit co-op organic farm, if that makes any difference. I'll give you some produce if you help me fix this! :-)

Re: Aficio MP C4500, no can scan!

The MP C4500 were first produced in June 2006. They are most likely replacing them and the company that they are buying from did not offer any trade-in.

The MP C4500 originally came in three models, the MP C4500, the MP C4500spf and the MP C4500g. The C4500 and C4500spf come with both scan and print installed and the Product Support Guide does not show a Print/Scan option. The C4500g was for GSA purposes and I do not know if it had Print/Scan installed but the fact that the PSG does not show an available option means it probably did. If the machine also does not print, I would say that someone removed the SD card. Otherwise I would say that the scan function has been disabled. Check Scanner SP settings. Also check Security Settings in User Tools. Certain security settings disable a number of functions. Since this was a government machine, the security setting is most likely set to 2 or higher.

Yea, when I see one-off on the BC Auction website, I am hesitant. But there's been at least a dozen of these go through there recently. The first ones went for well over $1,000. I got mine for under $300. I guess you get what you pay for...

Good info to know! Since these were owned by the British Columbia Government, I'm guessing they are the GSA model. The nameplate doesn't seem to indicate any sub-model. The WIM "Home" --> "Device Info" --> "Model Name" simply says "Aficio MP C4500".

Yea, an SD card problem was on my list of things to investigate. But it prints fine. (Well, I'm still sorting out a persistent jam in the internal tray during duplexing...)

There are no separate Scanner SP settings! The SP buttons are "Copy SP," "Fax SP," and "Printer SP," with an ominous space below where another button would fit. Under "Copy SP," there is a section labeled "Scanner" (SP-4XXX), but it doesn't show anything obvious for enable/disable. I will pour through the tech lit to see if any of the SP-4XXX functions might do me any good. I know better than to just go poking around changing things in there... :-)

And there's a big empty hole in the User Tools buttons, in the same position that there's a hole in the SP buttons (below "Printer Features"). Which together with the "------------" entries on the firmware versions page, makes me think it is more serious than simply being disabled.

If the my-ricoh.com admins decide to give me the keys to the candy store, will I be able to download and install the Scanner firmware without installing all the firmware? It appears it has to be in one big chunk, according to WIM --> "Configuration" --> "ROM Update".

Would someone with access to a machine with a working "Scanner" button show a firmware version dump, like I did above? It seems that would pretty much indicate if I was missing the Scanner firmware.

Feel free to "RTFM" me, if appropriate. (A starting point suggestion would be appreciated, though!) I've gone over all the user manuals, but have been saving the pleasure of reading the tech manuals for a rainy day...

Re: Aficio MP C4500, no can scan!

Since it prints, you may want to check the SD cards that are in the machine. Since it still had Java installed, there should be 2 installed. One will be the Java card, do not remove it without first stopping it in User Tools. The other should be the Print/Scan card. If it is labeled as Print/Scan, check to see if there is a parts number printed on it. Defective option SD cards can be replaced through parts.

Slimslob is correct about stopping java through Extended features, however after you STOP the java app you need to reboot the MFP to complete the stop and then go back into extended features and UNINSTALL the feature, then shut down and remove the Java card. Also if you are not running any Java app's leave the card out, the machine doesn't need it if there are NO java apps running ...................

Re: Aficio MP C4500, no can scan!

Many thanks to slimslob and tonerbob for their help!

I've done an inventory, and find the following SD card info:

              1: 2-0708, B8375001K, 32MB
              2: 0708, 1B8390421848, PostScript 3, 32MB
              3: A0801, B8610601K, VM CARD, Type C, Java, 64MB
Xtra: 0709,1B73518-4399B, DataOverwriteSecurity Unit Type D, handwritten on back: L907-682-0272

The "Xtra" one was in the storage slots in the front.

According to the training slides I downloaded, it seems there isn't supposed to be anything in Slot 3, which is reserved for installing firmware. Other service lit indicates that Java (in particular) should NOT be run from slot 3, but it must be downloaded. Also, the installation instructions for the Java card say to install an "Other Function" key cover in the sixth key slot. This machine has no sixth key. That and the hand-written part number on the extra SD card seems to indicate someone has dinked around with the SD cards.

I can't find the handwritten number in any of the parts list. Does it mean anything to anyone?

Anyway, unless having the VM CARD plugged in when slot 3 is supposed to be empty is screwing things up, it looks like the B837 SD card may be defective, meaning base software ("Scanner") that comes with every submodel is missing.

If so, what can I do at this point?

Can I tell for certain if the B837 card has had the scanning stuff deleted by looking at this card on a PC?

Thanks again for any advice offered!

Re: Aficio MP C4500, no can scan!

                The plot thickens...

I found an SD Card reader, and copied all four cards for examination. Most interesting is the one from Slot 1, which is supposed to contain the print/scan stuff.

The directory "module" appears to contain the actual firmware, and the stuff for the scanner function appear to be there:

                Code:
                # ls -la m*
                module:

It's the missing scan.cnf file with the mount(8) command!
                Code:
                # cat scan.cnf
                # ?X?L???i??scan.cnf?ݒ?t?@?C??
                ## 2002.07.30 A.Miyazaki ?X?L???i?????쐬

                # mount gzromfs ./scan.mod /gwarch/scanner
                # mount gzromfs module/scan.mod /gwarch/scanner
                mount -m >768M gzromfs module/scan.mod /gwarch/scanner
So I moved that file back into the gwinit.d directory, restarted, and YES! now the "Scanner" button brings up the scanner screen!

I can just hear the conversation:

MANAGER: Our employees are spending too much time goofing off, scanning cute kitten photos and baby pictures and such. Can you do anything about that?
                RICOH CE: Sure thing, boss!

Incidentally, mail began pouring in from the copier about low toner after I restored the scan.cnf file. So if you ever get one that won't email alerts, and by the way, the scanner doesn't work either, they are apparently tied together.

Thanks for the help and encouragement and for steering me to the SD cards. I've documented the fix here in the hope someone else can use it.

And if y'all ever need any UNIX help, let me know.

(PS: anyone know how to log into root access? :-)

I bought a similar unit from BC auction and had the same problem, which is no scan. I did the fix that you mentioned and got the scan working. I have another problem, the unit is protected with admin password. Is there any fix to reset this password?

I bought a similar unit from BC auction and had the same problem, which is no scan. I did the fix that you mentioned and got the scan working. I have another problem, the unit is protected with admin password. Is there any fix to reset this password?

Agreed. In fact, you are the second person today alone, asking the question.
