    MP C4500 Fax issue

    G'day all,

I'm having issue with the fax on a MPC4500, well two MPC4500, well three faxes to be exact.

Had to run up an old ex lease reconditioned MPC4500 with a known history to put out in the field, but the fax is giving me grief. it fails when sending and I am unable to get a dial tone from it when using on hook dial. Also unable to get a dial tone when using a handset. This has been tested on 2 separate known good fax lines. I have tried this on two separate MPC4500 with no love.

    I have:
    -updated all firmware
    -tried 2 wire fax lead
-tried a fax board out of another MPC4500
-tried the fax board out of a MP4500
-tried sacrificing the shop cat to strange gods

I know the fax board was working perfectly 2 Christmases ago as it is our old office machine and I had it working to forward faxes to email over the break. What am I missing?

So can you plug a standard (for your local in the world) handset in the tel jack on the fax and make a local call???? Or better yet, use the same handset plugged into the phone line jack and make a local call that way?????????????????

Not able to make a call with a handset via the tel jack on the fax, but can make and receive calls with the handset plugged directly into the line. It is a dedicated fax line, not through a PBX or using voip, I have even tried connecting with and without an ADSL filter to no avail.

          Hi

are all the fax settings reset to factory? (seeing that you used to do fax forwarding previously). If not do a fax ram clear in fax sp mode and give it another try.

Are there any error messages on the screen when the fax is operating? Something like "Addressbook data error" or "SRAM has been cleared"?

What country code is the fax unit set to?

Have you tried a different cord between the wall and the machine?

Yes, have reset to factory and have done a fax ram clear. No error messages. The fax is set to the correct country code for Australia both in fax system switch 0F (00010110) and in the NCU parameter (22).

Have tried 3 or 4 different leads, 2wire and 4 wire, both with and without an ADSL filter. There is a old working lanier LF310 connected to the line atm.

I can get a dial tone if I take any of the three boards out of the machine and connect them to the working fax line and a phone.

The issue also reoccurs in 2 different locations 30 or so kms apart.

I dont know if its a long shot but both the machines have had the ESA transformer extended feature installed on them and next chance I get I will be taking it off to see if that is the common factor, cant see how that would interfere with the fax but straws clutching and all that.

Has the customer recently switched to the NBN at all?

Have you measured the line voltage? I have come across telephone lines where the line voltage is to weak to "drive" the fax unit.

There is a piggy back board on the fax option that is fixed by 2 clips. When you push the fax assembly in to the copier sometimes it can pop out from the jolt from its connector to the main fax board. in the past i had to sellotape the piggy back board to keep it in place.

that is called an MBU and can cause all kinds of issues, especially if the battery on it goes dead!

If it is loose from the main fax board, the fax function normally does not appear as available since the fax program is loaded on it.

Normally along with an SC code.

                            Re: MP C4500 Fax issue

Sorry for the late reply, but I had to walk away from the issue for a couple of days (gosh its nice to have that luxury) the customer is renovating their office and have a smaller fax so no pressure there. No NBN, good fax line, I have played swapsys with MUB boards and have tested the on-board batteries on both the MBUs and FCU for charge.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I'm still stumped. I know the line is within spec so its either going to be the machine or the boards. Its doing the same thing in 2 different mpc4500 so that kinda points towards the boards but having 2 boards (3 if you count the MP4500 one I tried) fail seems incredible.

My next move will be grabbing another MPC4500 from our warehouse which currently is being used for parts, pulling it together into some kind of working order bringing it into the workshop and bang my head against that.

I'll post the results if i see them!
