    Ricoh 270 smudging

6 months back i had a call on this machine for smudging which it was actually dropping toner on the page so i replaced the pcu and it fixed the problem but now it's back again. This is a low volume customer so new pcu is 6 mths old with a little over 2k on it. When you open the right door it had a buildup of toner on the transfer area so i vaccumed that out and replaced transfer ass'y and took the toner bottle out and ran copies until the toner light came on, reinstalled toner, it loaded but still get same smudges in same area and toner falling on transfer again. I can replace the pcu and it works fine then but i can't afford to replace the pcu every 2k copies on a contract machine. Every thing as far as sensor readings and drum ground seem fine and the machine is clean as a whistle, so could i possibly just have another bad pcu again???

Are you sure that toner is not dropping from the toner supply unit onto the PCU? These machines are notorious for that problem. The toner will pile up on the forward edge of the PCU frame and ends up contaminating the charge roller area, the laser slit glass, and eventually the transfer roller if it goes unchecked.

I bet if you open the PCU and clean it out, the problem will go away (at least temporarily.
Don't take that toner with me!

No dumping out of the bottle holder, i know all about that one. Everything was unusually clean except for the transfer area. Im sure if i seperated the pcu and cleaned it it may help but those things are hard to get back together correctly but i may try that. BTW the drum looks clean also, no toner scattered on it.

Some techs at the place I used to work at said that only replacing the NVRAM fixed their 270 problems that did this. I had one just like this, and we ended up exchanging it with a trade-in at the shop. It was taking too much time to mess with.

Strange, I can understand clearing the NVRAM to resolve but not replacing.

Yeah, I guess that they swapped everything they could think of, and a newer to the machine NVRAM seemed to fix it. They may have just swapped it from another boneyard machine, rather than a new NVRAM, but none-the-less it seemed to fix it. They just mentioned that they changed it out.

My thought is that there may be something in there that is getting corrupt and it's something that just clearing it does not fix.
