    MPC 3003 bypass sensor

Thought i would run this by the group here. I have a customer who likes to use the bypass tray a lot on their new MPC3003.

My initial call was for bypass jamming, I found the rotary sensor in the bypass was reading 12x18 size when the slides were at the 8.5x11 WEF, if i slide them in closer it reads SERA3 or something like that. After messing with it i just replaced the sensor with a new one and everything went back to normal for about 4 weeks, they called back the other day and its doing the exact same thing again, I pulled the tray apart and verified the sensor was aligned properly, i even removed the sensor and pulled the gear off to clean the contact arms and spring them out a bit and put it back together. When i first booted it up the tray had the right size but as soon as i went to use it the display immediately swapped to 12x18 again. I have rarely seen the rotary sensors read incorrectly unless damaged or the alignment is off, never have I had 1 just stop reading the right size, let alone 2 in a row on the same machine within 4 weeks. So now im concerned that something is causing it, I have checked the wiring harness, I have updated the rom to most recent.

Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions other then it was just two bad sensors.

It could be a firmware problem or a connection problem between the bypass and the I board. Try reading the rotary switch in Input Checks.

The wiring harness on that model bypass is a nightmare. The engineer that designed it obviously hates people. Look at how it folds up in the bypass door when they open and close the door. We have been having to replace the harness on several machines and the obvious solution is leave the door open or closed. It will break the wires if moved very much at all. BAD design!

The rom is already up to date made sure of that even the most recent last 30 days. I did inspect the wiring harness and it looked fine, what baffled me was after i replaced the sensor the first time it worked fine for 4 weeks then just stopped, so if it is the harness its randomly shorting out the sensor. I was hoping maybe they had a bad batch of sensors or issues with the bypass table itself that others have seen, this is the first time i have had 2 rotary sensors fail without some sort of physical damage to the guides or table.

I'm not trained on that machine. So I'm curious, how does it determine the length of the paper in the bypass?
Also, if SP5-990-004 is the same on that machine as it is on older machines, does it show any misfeeds from the bypass?
Just a couple of things I had not seen discussed on this thread yet, so I thought I'd throw them out there. Sorry if that was a waste of time.

It does have the length sensor which i already disabled like we did on all the previous models, i did try it enabled as well with no change, generally by default you can put in 8.5x11 wef without any manual changes, with the length sensor off and the side fences at the 11 inch width it assumes an 8.5 length by default. Also if printing using driver command it will jam due to length misreeding. If i physically go into user tools and set the size i can get it to work correctly, but it works automatically when the sensor worked.

Set the bypass tray to Driver/Command. It is in User Tools - Printer Features - Settings or System - Paper Tray Settings.

I have been recently called back for the same issue as before and now i see what you meant, I also see as of about 4 weeks ago they put out a TSB with redesign on parts for this issue. The TSB only lists the the feed assembly and the new cover but does not label a number for the wiring harness itself, I for the life of me can not find the harness number in the parts catalog. I believe its just the harness from the sensor to the plug on the right rear side, i am not sure if they include the harness in the assembly or if its seperate.

                  The new part numbers are
                  Manual feed assembly D1494828
                  Duplex cover D1494840

Ah thanks, i got the parts from the TSB, not what i expected its the actual feed station for the bypass not the tray portions, so not sure that is going to help.
