You need to install a certificate on the MP C2050. Before exporting the certificate, view it to to check the expiration date. Certificate on older browsers might be expired. If you use Firefox and have the latest version (38.0.5) there will be 2 entries for Google Internet Authority. One of them is expired. Certificate on IE for Windows 8 or later is current.

The following is from Ricoh Global Knowledgebase:

    Notes:
This procedure enables the use of SMTP over SSL using Port 465 (this port number cannot be changed).
Some mail servers require that SMTP be used.
Most SMTP over SSL settings can only be configured via the operation panel.
The only setting related to SMTP over SSL that can be configured via Web Image Monitor (WIM) is the Site
certificate: Configuration > Security > Site certificate.
    TLS is not supported.
This procedure uses Google Gmail for the SMTP server, and Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox for
the browser. However, these are only used as examples.
Open either Internet Explorer 1. or Mozilla Firefox
    • Mozilla Firefox
    a. Open Firefox.
    b. Select [Tools] => [Options].
    c. Click the [Advanced] Tab then select [View Certificates].
    d. Click on the [Authorities] tab.
    e. Scroll through the list Until you see [Equifax].
    f. Select [Google Internet Authority] then select the [Export] button.
    g. Select a location to [Export the Certificate] then click [Save].
    h. Click [OK] to close the Certificate Manager.
    • Internet Explorer
    a. Open internet Explorer.
    b. Select [Internet Options].
    c. Select the [Contents] tab then select [Certificates].
    d. Select the [Trusted Root Certificates Authorities] tab.
    e. Scroll the list and locate [Equifax Secure Authority Certificate].
    f. Click the [Export] button.
    g. Click [Next] in the Wizard.
    h. Select [Base-64 encoded X.509 (.CER)] and click [Next].
Click the [Browse] button and choose where to save the certificate and name the file, then
    click [Save].
    i.
    j. Click [Next] in the Wizard, then click [Finish].
    k. A message should appear that the export was successful. Click [OK].
    l. Click [Close] to close the [Certificates] window, click [OK] to Exit Internet Option.
How do I setup SMTP over SSL on a Ricoh Family group device https://tscweb.custhelp.com/app/answ.../132699/kw/SSL FO...
    1 of 2 9/4/2012 9:21 AM
In your browser, enter the IP address of the Ricoh Family 2. group device.
    3. Click [Login] and login as Administrator.
    4. Click on the [Configuration] link.
    5. Under the [Security Section], click on [Site Certificate].
    6. Click on the [Browse] button and navigate to the location where the certificate resides.
Click on the import button. Once completed, the certificate will appear under Imported Site Certificates. Click
[OK], then close Web image Monitor.
    7.
    8. Go to the device and Select [User tools] => [System Settings] => [File transfer] => [SMTP Server].
Enter the address for your SMTP server (in this example: "smtp.gmail.com") and turn ON [Use secure
    Connection(SSL)], then click [OK].
    9.
    10. Select [SMTP Authentication].

Just to clarify....Is this actually true for this generation machine, because I was under the impression that encryption simply wasn't supported, no matter what, until at least the 02 series?

I don't think they do either when it comes to SSL.

Some third party providers, you can still use non SSL, but are restricted to staying in the same domain. (IE, in this case, you can send within the yahoo domain, but can't send it to anyone else outside of that). Most of the time, this isn't a big issue from the standpoint that most people send the email to themselves and then forward it out from there.

Scan to email is a lot less popular than it has been in the past with most customers moving to third party providers. When I am talking to my customers about what they want, they usually change their mind after I go over the issues with scan to email. These include the fact your information leaves the building and comes back. If there are issues in the future because the provider changed something (and they do often) that would cause scanning not to work, we will charge a fee to attempt to fix it, even if you have a service agreement. Also in most cases, you can scan to the world and there is no way at all to tell who sent the scan from the machine unless you go to a lot more trouble.

After having this conversation, most customers are quite content to do scan to folder.

What I've been doing lately, when there isn't a nonSSL account readily available is use smtp2go, because, as you said, an email provider that works today may change their requirements tomorrow.
SMTP2go can be used in place of the SMTP server of any email provider that I've tried so far (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), and very simple to setup.
It's free for up to 20 messages per day, and only $45/year for up to 2000/month.
              So far, so good

The MP C2050/2550 was the first color line that supported encryption. What I posted earlier was Ricoh's instructions for installing a site certificate. Certificate is necessary for SMTP over SSL. SMTP over SSL is required by Yahoo.

It is the first color line that allowed it.

Yahoo and AOL don't allow emails to themselves with attachments Period.

Internet carriers give free email addresses as part or their service.
Comes with antivirus and spam filters.
Have the customer setup an email account with them and use that as a sender.

Yahoo has been hacked 5 times in the last 3 years.

I would use the email provided by the PROVIDER.

Nothing is this world is free.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

You can get around having to specify a sender programing the administrator email in user tools and then turning on Auto specify sender or , use default sender in user tools. then the sender will always be that email address. If they want to specify senders the address book entries have to be programed as senders as well as recipients.
