Savin RW 240WD Plotbase error - Please help!!!!

I have an unusual situation with a couple of machines that I can't seem to figure out. Basically, there are two workstations out of about thirty that are having problems accessing the printer preferences. When they click on the preferences button, from within a program or directly from the printer icon, they get about a 30 second delay and then this error

"Connection to the SNMP server down. Plotter settings may be wrong. Make sure all software is running properly"

Once they click 'ok' to this message, they get the perferences window, but any changes they make do not hold. They can print to the plotter, but there are no adjustments to the paper size or anything else and their prints are messed up.

I first started troubleshooting this as a client side issue. I deleted the printer and driver, rebooted, and then re-added the printer. I have logged in as a different user (admin) and still have the same issue. I turned off all firewall and antivirus software...no help. I have verified all network settings match a working machine, and I have checked domain policy that could be preventing access. I have verified no recent MS updates. Once I checked the second machine, I thought maybe it could be a problem with the software or pc running the plotter. I went through all troubleshooting steps I could think of and called Copy Products (the company that owns the plotter) and they came out and verified everything is working fine. Then I tried another machine and it seemed to work fine. After realizing I didn't take my troubleshooting as far as I should have, I checked every client machine....they all work with the exception of the first two. Now, that tells me it must be something specific to those machines and not the plotter or plotter pc. I just can't figure out what it could be.

If anyone has ANY ideas as to what could cause this error, I would love to hear them. I'm trying to avoid wiping out two systems that are loaded with CAD and Bentley programs not to mention numerous other applications. Thanks in advance for your support.

Is this a new install or have these issues appeared after being in place for awhile? Is this from the winprint only? Are the troubled machines running Vista? What version is the Plotbase software at on the print server? Have you tried using the plotclient?

Samir: No, not again. I... why does it say paper jam when there is no paper jam? I swear to God, one of these days, I just kick this piece of shit out the window.

First make sure that you have the latest verion of Plotbase running on your Plotserver.

On the Plotserver make sure you have the SNMP port open on the SP2 firewall it should be: 161

This is not a new install and they have been able to successfully print and change preferences in the past. I can't pinpoint exactly when this stopped happening though. It's been about a week since they've noticed it, but it could have been longer if they just didn't need to print for a while.

I'm not sure what 'winprint' is, but the printer is installed on each client and when they right click on the printer and click 'printer preferences' that is when it happens. It also occurs when in other programs (ie..AutoCAD) and they try to go to preferences.

They are both XP Pro systems.

I'll have to verify the version and I'm not sure what plotclient is...

        Thanks for your time!

Make sure that SNMP is installed in the PC running Plotbase by going to add/Remove programs -- Managing and Monitoring tools -- just check Simple Network Managing Protocol.

You might need a Windows XP CD -- or just find the i386 folder on your computer.

Winprint is just a driver. but you should also be able to use the regular GDI driver.

Okay. I am going to remote into that machine in just a minute to check on those things. I do know that SNMP is running on the plotserver as I have already stopped and started it in my troubleshooting. I also have about 28 other machines that don't seem to be having this issue. I'll double-check all of it though just to make sure I'm not missing something. Thanks for your help!

Okay...The plotbase version on the plot server is 3.3.025. It is running SNMP and the firewall is currently off. I'm not sure what the latest plotbase version is. I'll have to get with Copy Products to see if I can update it (since they own this machine.) Thanks again for your help.

3.3 yeah that is the first version when they first released Plotbase.
Try updating it to 3.7.1.1 -- the new versions have a feature that lets you configure the firewall automatically.
