That Will just scratch the roller!
Fold a sheet of paper into 8. Using the shortest edge, scrape it against the roller (if it's black!). Vacuum the roller to get rid of the debris. If you can find a doctor blade cleaning tool, clean the blade, dried toner will affect the gap.
Check the bearing on the back of the drum shaft. You need low resistance between the shaft and the bias terminal. On old machines the resistance gets higher and affects the drum earth / bias relationship. This may seem ok when not running, but I've changed the bearing before for this kind of issue and cured the problem.
