Codec G711

Hello wonderful tech peeps,

I received a strange question from a user today that I had never heard. I guess they are thinking about changing service providers for phone and Internet, and she asked if the Sharp MX-4100N supported codec G711.

I tried Googling around, asking co-workers here, but nobody has been asked anything like that or has the answer. Does anyone know what exactly she is referring to, and if this MFP supports it?

go to Wikipedia or search on G.711, it is an ITU standard for basically digitizing voice signals, one of the ITU standards for VOIP.


sharp has a bulletin for voip and the fax on mfp.

Thank you for the reply, faxman. However, I still couldn't find anything about if the Sharp 4100 supports this codec. I checked the user manual, Google, but still nothing.

What a strange question their ISP wants her to ask us...

sounds like customer is switching there phone service to their isp ,which then would be a VOIP system (digital instead of analog) the codec is supposed to be part of the T.38 protocol (ITU standard), which it should technically work, the Sharp fax kit is analog(plain old style phone line), sometimes they work on a VOIP system. If you have access to sharp tech support website, there is a voip bulletin, I think it is a tech tip.
