    [Misc] MX 2640 HDD

Question I have is that I have a MX 2640 that is going back to lease return but the HDD needs to be wiped. Not a sharp guy but if you format the HDD do you have to put firmware back in to make it pass paper for leasing company?

depending on your customer and the nature of the data on the hdd, there is a end of lease function that can be accessed through the web page , it does a DOD wipe of the hdd and I think it clears all user areas. A format will not delete all the data on the HDD, there is software available that can pull data off of a formatted HDD.

I think it's really funny how were concerned people are with wiping the hard drive considering nobody really ever saves anything sensitive to it and all of the worry about it came from that one dateline episode

I beg to differ with you that "nobody really ever saves anything sensitive"; when I would set up a lease return for resale, I've found social security numbers, DOB, IRS returns, medical diagnosis, and others - if that info had gotten into nefarious hands, identity theft would have been easy.

Most of our customers that are worried about it just keep the hdd. I would ask what kind of dipshit saves that stuff to the printer, but we know how customers are.

Also on most mfp's with hdd print jobs are processed thru the HDD, so print data remains on the drive, seen this first hand many years ago . going to U.S. state department when in engineering support , to make HDD quick removal from copier and employing farady shields on back of copier, for mfps going to embassies this was in early 2000"s and you wouldn't believe the stuff that can be retrived from an mfp .

Also most new Sharp MFP's have a setting in web page to turn on a simple version of data security to erase copy/print data from hdd, but once it is turned on it can't be turned off.

Remove the HDD and plug it into a PC, either directly or via enclosure. Do a low level format through the PC to completely wipe it clean.
