Trying to get old Sharp AR-M355N working with Win 10.

    I'm having trouble.

First I tired setting it up as a network printer. It is connected to a small switch which is connected to a range extender which is connected by WiFi to a guest network. The printer gets a valid IP address via DHCP. The printer will print from its test menu. I can log in to its IP address in a web browser and print a test page from there, too. I set it up as a network printer in Window 10 using Sharp's PCL6 driver (had to disable driver signature enforcement to install it) but any time I print a test page it just disappears. I see it leave the queue in Windows and the printer starts to do something as if it is going to print but then it doesn't print anything. I've checked the job list at the printer and see nothing logged.

Next, instead of using Sharp's driver I set it up to use a Generic Text Only driver and that actually worked but I expect that would severely limit printing options available in Windows. Then I tried using a Microsoft PCL6 driver and that did not work. Same results as using the Sharp driver. The printer starts to make noise like it is going to do something but stops and does nothing.

Next I tried disconnecting the network cable and connecting a USB cable. Windows detects it and adds a device but seems to not install any drivers for it. I tried adding the printer as a local printer, selecting the USB001 port type of connection, and sending a print job to that but I get an error in the print queue telling me it failed to print.

Is this combination just not workable? The owner told me he got it from a government office and he's sure they were using Win 10. I suspect, if that is true, then they were using some sort of print server and not directly sending print jobs to the printer but I don't know.

Try an HP driver like LJ4000. You will have to configure it a different way but it should work. I have used them in the past. Something has changed recently and I have had problems getting these to print in windows 10. You can do a windows update that looks for the driver and try the MXM350N driver. Takes awhile to download but it might be worth a try. Make sure you are using a static IP address.

    Good luck

You can get drivers for the MX-M450 for winodws 10 64bit from Sharp Global.

Open the port settings on the driver and make sure the port is set to LPR and not 9500. Give it a Que name and check the byte counting enabled box

I hadn't checked back here until just now. Thanks for the suggestions. Though, earlier today I got it working. Seems that the LPR automatic configuration by hostname option when installing the driver sort of doesn't work. I was getting messages that the printer couldn't be connected to even though I could ping it from a command prompt. I even set up a DHCP reservation for the IP address. Finally I gave up and tried setting a static IP address on the printer and set up the printer again in Windows but chose the option to point directly at an IP address. After that I had no issues printing.
