    Sharp MX-5050V C4-20 L4-06

We rebuilt this model with a full PM replacing all normal maintenance parts a month ago. We replaced the drums, blades, charger kits, dv, transfer belt unit, 2nd roller kit, fuser unit, rollers, but did not change the clutch and drive kits as it only has 150k black and 100k color. After several thousand prints, it's throwing a C4-20 code (1st transfer HV output trouble) and stops the paper at the transfer belt unit 8 times out of 10 when printing a color print. I ran SIM 8-6 and none of the 1TC units showed leakage or abnormalities. Black prints work fine, though. We checked that the transfer unit rotated correctly and the ptc looked good and clean and were installed correctly. After that did not help, we tried switching the ptc unit and the transfer belt unit with good used ones to test even though they were practically new, but that also made no difference.

After we switched units, it would randomly pop an L4-06 code. (transfer unit lift trouble) I checked in SIM 6-3 and it checked fine. Now it prints perfect in black now again. The gears that move the color transfer rollers inside the belt work fine and can rotate them up and down.

I was a bit stumped with the C4-20, but after the L4-06 showed up, I'm leaning towards the primary transfer clutch being bad all of the sudden. If it's simply a bad clutch, it would certainly cause the L code, but could it also cause the C4-20 code?

Since I don't have a clutch in stock, I'll be removing a clutch from one of the trays in the DE25 temporarily as they are the same part number.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Both of these codes can be caused by the non-modified PTC Holder. You replaced the PTC Unit but if you don't have the updated PTC Holder, C4-20 and in combination with L4-06 when switching to a color job can definitely occur.
The latest PTC Holder part number is LHLDZ2540FCZ3 and was changed in May 2018. Check your serial number to make sure you've got this updated part installed.
The PTC can have an arching/discharge against the original version PTC Holder. You may find a small burn mark on the plastic frame too.
The PTC Holder is removed with the single screw beside the PTC. Check and confirm the 2 springs at the back are properly inserted through the frame.

Thank you. I'm having the part (and an extra) overnighted as we speak. All 4 of the 5050 models we installed are 2018, but those may be updated already.

Every C4-20 we've had with your error description was a bad clutch.
Worst case both of them died, happened to me once, so better take two with you just in case.

I do have two of the clutches ordered since the transfer unit lift clutch and the transfer clean out clutch are the same. And like I said it's the same clutch that's used in the desk units if anyone really needs one to switch temporarily. I'll be replacing the transfer clutches, PTC, and PTC housing all asap. Thanks.

The MX-5050V is back up and running. I had 2 separate issues here. Maybe one issue affected or caused the other, I'm not sure. I replaced the PTC holder (along with a brand new PTC) that was the old style housing and clearly had some arcing burns on it. That took care of the C4-20, but the L4-06 would still come up randomly. So then I replaced both of the transfer unit clutches since they were fairly cheap and easy to replace. Both boards swing out of the way, then the 2 clutches are conveniently in it's own pack attached to the back of the main drive pack. That took care of the L4-06.

Ran 200 color and 50 black with no issues. Thanks for the help above.
